Apple published a support bulletin recently, finally disclosing what it’s going to take to replace those Macbook Pro batteries.
It can be done, but not by the end user, and not for free. If you take it into your local Apple store (with an appointment) it’ll be a same day process. If you ship it in, expect a 3-4 week delay. Either way, it’s going to cost you $179 to get it done. Ouch.

I saw the same thing on a few blogs, like this one – http://www.tastemac.com/2009/01/179-for-macbook-pro-17-battery-replacement/ – last Wednesday.
You should break the story on the Pre next. :-P
Frankly, it’s not that outrageous a price, when you think about it.
The replacement batteries for a 15″ MBP and 13″ MB are both $129 from Apple. They are also much smaller batteries with correspondingly shorter battery lives. That the 17″ MBP is $50 more reflects both the additional size and capacity of the battery in terms of cost to manufacture as well as the installation service itself. Even if the battery was user-replaceable, I think it’s cost more simply due to its size.
Definitely expensive. Maybe very few guys will aford it, at least I will not especially in the hard recession. What about the replacement laptop batteries for apple, it is much cheaper.
