After a quick breathalyzer test at 11:30 am, we were granted access for a spin in Ford’s upcoming escape. Overall, we came away impressed with the drive but curious about what the plug-in’s price will be set at for the 2012 model year. Will it be higher than the seemingly inferior Chevy Volt? Ford’s being tight lipped ’bout it probably while it surveys the every-increasing plug-in market. After driving it around the basement of the Cobo Arena, we can tell you that it’s a hell of a ride. Smooth and super-duper quiet. Well done, Ford. Well done. Video after the break.

Whaaaaaaat, so awesome. Was there a couple of fails for the breathalyzer test? Looks so awesome though.
Nice. You went a max speed of 5 mpg. I bet you could really tell a lot about the acceleration and it’s smoothness haha. I felt akward watching when you said that.
So are all the hybrid vehicles going to have hideous decals on them. They really have to make it a point that it’s hybrid I guess and that’s the easiest way.
At least they are trying.
Hmm… interesting. Good effort by Ford. Let’s see if it will survive the tests of time.
wait,… 140mpg? so, like, its a 2 cylinder with 125hp, and its highway rating is 19pmg? :)
I’m a little confused also, he said 120 MPG in the opener?
WTF? “Plug in”, does this mean it gets it’s power from the carbon burning nuclear waste producing power grid. Green = Scam, hope all those hippie wanabe boneheads are getting some peace of mind out of all these bullshit green companies. Just be honest, the only green truely being persued is cash.
They are trying to make advances in technology to help the world, and you are still negative about it. GET A LIFE !
Dear Sceptical,
You are not quite right. Plugin means much less carbon dioxoide emissions, even though you still have to burn some coal. Something 2-3 times less. And it does not exhaust much in the traffic jam (unlike modern gasoline cars). The source of electricity can be nuclear, solar, hydo. Last but not least, US has it coal for 200-300 years, but domestic oil has basically finished already.
Quit typing out of your arse. The power grid is remarkably more efficient for powering cars than 100 million combustion engines.
He said 120mpg for something (wasn’t clear) and 70mpg on the highway. Both are amazing, but not the 140 thats in the title of this article. Looks like a pretty boring test drive. I would love to hear more about this though.
I predicted this – http://www.adrianeden.com/world-news/predictions-for-2009/
Also, Cuba WILL be the last country to adopt electric cars, wait and see.
Cuba is not a country. Its like an illegal suburb of Florida.
Smooth? You drove it in a basement… ridiculous.
LOL… I was thinking the same thing.
Listen carefully to the so called salesperson. Is it me or does he contradict himself several times. At one point he claims only 40mpg. I’d never buy from this guy.
I hate the term “MPG” with plug-in cars, because it’s a half-truth. Yes, it may go that far on a gallon of gasoline, but how much will it cost me in electricity to charge each night? $10? Maybe there should be a new hybrid energy factor that measures overall cost to run the vehicle, taking into account gas and electricity usage. Like the EnergyGuide labels on appliances.
I agree 100%, it’s a misleading ratio. He did say however that the battery delivers 10 kilowatt hours so about 1.00 for a complete charge if you pay .10 per kwh.
With my home electric plan the cost goes down to $0.05/KW/H during off peak hours.
My round trip to work is less than 30 miles. So one weeks work driving is going to cost about $2.50 in electricity
For city dwellers, plugging it into a non-existent garage, might be a reason to avoid this auto.
Kudos to Ford for creating a HMUV (High maintenance utility vehicle)
Still only 40 miles on a single charge with pure electric use. BYD in China already roled theirs out in China!

PLEASE correct the punctuation mistake in the title on the crosspost at TechCunch. “Ford’s” is missing the apostrophe over there.
You are an idiot to buy a product from this company. They don’t know how to stay in business. Yes, they may stick around, but I could even run a multibillion dollar company if the government supplied the revenue stream. This environmentally smart crap is a PR ply. All the liberal stupids will fall for it. I’m just glad it’s there money, not mine, this time.
Your tax money is paying for it dip crick.
I rather take delivery of the the Telsa Model “S” fully electric car expected to hit the streets in 2011/12…no gas, 300 mile range per charge, 45 minutes to fully charge it, and it looks beautiful http://www.teslamotors.com/
Forget ‘gas’ anything
