WTF? Has Firefox been failing for you under OS X?

wtf1

Is anyone else seeing a lot of crashes from Firefox recently? It may have been after I installed CS4 for OS X and it seems that Flash is destroying things. But best of all, the crazy Crash Detector keeps crashing, which is something I’ve only seen in Windows before this. Anyone else see this?

  • You must be psychic or something…either that, or you possess some other weird superpower because I was reading this post in my RSS reader and clicked to open it in Firefox so I could comment that yes, Firefox definitely has been acting up lately…and then Firefox crashed!

Firefox hasn’t crashed a whole lot for me, but it has been very, very slow. I normally have no problem opening up 10 tabs or more, but it’s slowing down to a crawl now. It’s to the point where if I want to open a new tab I have to open it, wait a couple seconds for it to get it’s bearings, and then enter the address I want.

  • I haven’t had any problems with the nightlies/Shiretoko.

  • not any more than usual.

  • Firefox has been horrible for me on OS X for the last few builds. I’ve gotta kill it every few hours, or activity monitor starts reporting that FF is taking up 105% of CPU and my whole system comes to a crawl.

  • The past few builds have been horrible for me – it’s almost to the point where I’m considering returning to *shudder* Safari.

  • happened to me last week…endless loop of crashing. start it in safe mode and disable some extensions. they were the culprit for me.

  • Ever since 3 I have had to close it and restart it every few hours otherwise it grinds to a hault and I need to open Safari to see if it’s the browser or my connection…it’s always the browser.

  • Get a Mac.

  • Yes my Firefox crashes too, but it’s often when I close it.

  • Firefox has always worked perfectly for me on my Mac-Mini here at work. Lately, though, playing music on MySpace has been a pain, with it sometimes skipping during songs and requiring me to restart the browser to remedy it. Possibly a Flash problem?

  • Over the last few weeks my firefox (Mac OS X) has been crashing increasingly frequently. Not sure what has changed. It is frustrating enough that I regularly have to resort to Safari in order to see what I want.

  • Nope.

First I’d create a new user on your system, login and see if Firefox is crashing there. If it is, then it’s probably OS, hardware, or the FF3 app itself. If not, then it’s most likely a problem with your firefox profile. Just rename ~/Library/Application Support/Firefox to “Firefox-BAD”. Relaunch Firefox and import your bookmarks, reinstall add-ons.

If that should fail, I’d recommend a session with AppleJack, and maybe even memtest.
    http://applejack.sourceforge.net/

And if that doesn’t clear things up, an archive and install of the OS (saving user accoutns) should do the trick.

Most likely I’d bet it’s your FF profile. I’ve occasionally run into this issue before and had to start over with a fresh FF setup.

  • Ever since 3.0.5 it’s crashy. I fully swapped over to safari….

  • Yes. This is exactly the same thing I’ve been running into. I’ve felt it under “Minefield” as well. Minefield crashing is to be expected, but I also noticed it in the stable branch of FF. This all happened with the updated flash player for me. Before both FF and Minefield were rock solid for me.

  • Not exactly a comment about the article.

But, I felt the article title is not decent.

Yeah, WTF is part of the lingo these days. But when reputable publication is writing an article, I think it should not be.

    WTF….who cares…!!!!

  • We see a lot of crashing on OSX…so unfortunately most of the data is coming from IE users on http://www.searchon.me

  • I have the same problem today. Then I found out that it was CoolIris causing all the problem. Just disable it in safe mode.

  • Good, it’s not just me! I run Minefield, but I’ve been getting Kernel panics for maybe the past week or so, at random times (usually when I’m not at my computer). One day I restarted my computer and didn’t immediately open Minefield, and it didn’t panic while I was at work.

So yeah, Minefield has been making my MacBook Pro very upset lately, but if I quit out of FireFox when I’m not using it, I don’t have any issues. It seems to happen the most when the “New build available, click to restart Shiretoko” window pops up, but that window might have just been popped up and the computer Kernel panicked later…

  • Yep – Firefox has been a nightmare for me on 10.4 for the last two or three builds.

What’s really irritating is that is sometimes crashes when nothing is happening!

It’s got to the point where I’m beginning to think it’s got it in for me…. ‘Firefox three – this time it’s personal’.. that sort of thing.

As others have suggested, I’ve been thinking of returning to Safari…but in reality will probably put up with it until Chrome comes out on the Mac.

  • It has been crashing on me with flash.

FF better not give me a reason to switch to Chrome when it comes out for Mac…..because I’m VERY interested.

  • I only have cs3 installed, but my FF has been buggy for a while, not letting me save bookmarks. It always references the last-saved bookmark and I can either overwrite it or do nothing.

    That’s on my 24″ 2.8GHz iMac running OS X 10.5.6

  • crashes daily and if I see that effin pinwheel again I think I’m going to snap

  • Firefox on my g5 (Tiger) iMac has become so unstable, it’s now crashing before the icon on the dock even has a chance to bounce.

On my macbook (10.5.6), it’s bad but not nearly that bad.

I’ve had to reset my browser preferences to *shudder* Safari.

It won’t even stay up long enough to start disabling extensions..

  • Flash has been crashing safari a lot for me lately(last couple of weeks). Guess I won’t bother switching to FF!

  • Firefox dreaded pinwheel when I try the + tab. Runs a loop of “(untitled)” links that will load a hundred plus tabs. Locks everything up if I try to get out of Firefox while it supposedly closes all tabs (which it never does). I have to shut down with the button (can’t force close either–nothing will get out of the closing tabs loop). Reload Firefox?
Switch to Safari (oh no, not that). Anyone?
