Apple nixes iPhone Nano and netbook rumors

Everyone’s been all a-flutter lately (for reasons I do not understand) about the possibility of either a smaller-sized iPhone or a tiny Apple netbook. Both of those things sound terrible to me, and Apple seems to agree. During a conference call today reporting their totally awesome earnings report, they also addressed the rumors.

RE: iPhone Nano,

We’re not going to play in the low-end voice phone business. That’s not who we are, that’s not why we’re here. Goal is not to lead unit sales, but to build the world’s best phone.

The iPhone is what they felt was the best possible size and shape when they made it. I doubt they’ve changed their opinion on that. An iPhone Nano would be compromise in design and technology, and they’re not about that.

And RE: netbooks,

We’re watching that space, but from our [point of view] the products are based on hardware that’s much less powerful, software technology that’s not good, cramped displays. We don’t think that people are going to be pleased with those type of products. It’s a category we watch, we have some ideas here, but we think the products there now are inferior and won’t provide the kind of experience people want.

You might add to the argument that the reason why people buy netbooks is that they’re functional and dirt cheap. The day Apple puts out something that fits both those criteria, I’ll eat a treasure chest full of doubloons.

  • get over yourself devincoldewey. the shuffle is dirt cheap and quite functional. in fact, the iphone is essentially the cheapest smartphone you can get with at&t’s contract. quite frankly, your arguments have more flaws than all of microsofts current product lines (okay, nothing has as much as that, but you’re close).

apple said they’re not going to dabble in the low-end voice phone market. they didn’t say anything about an iphone nano. apple recognized the markets for several sized (and priced) ipods. They should recognize that a $100-$150 phone that is 80-85% the surface area of the iphone would have tremendous appeal.

as for netbooks, they have the highest return rates of any consumer electronics device. don’t get me wrong, some people certianly love them, but alot of people i work with went nuts with them for about a week, but then realized how limited they really are.

i mean honestly, they’re using 3-4 year old technology in a new package really.

  • if microsoft hadn’t messed up with vista so bad, there wouldn’t be much of a market for these things. anyways, of the 4 i know who have them, 2 have already given them away, another is looking to pawn it off and get that $800 HP tablet deal and the other barely uses it compared to his full size labtop.

the macbook with nvidia graphics on the other hand makes a lot more sense if you’re looking for portability w/o sacrificing power and performance.

but i think apple recognizes that they could build something with screen real estate (10 inches at least) based around the ion in the $700 – $900 range that would satisfy a lot of people. do i think they will? probably not, but i know they could.

  • This is all they need to do and I’ll buy both (and about a billion other people would to, imho). They do that and then let’s see the earnings reports…
