This is a pretty awesome idea. The Bulb-Sound-Speaker, designed by Castiglione Morelli, is, as you might guess from the name, a light bulb that’s actually a speaker. It’s powered in the same way bulbs are, via the screw-in bit there, and then there’s a Bluetooth transceiver and Altec Lansing speaker. You plug the other part of the unit into your iPod and there you have it, sound coming from your light fixture.

Now, I can see how some might think this is really dumb. But nuh-uh, you’re dumb. I think it’s great, although if you planned your house or apartment out right, there shouldn’t be any places where the sound can’t reach if you want it to. But for that study or reading chair where you’d prefer just to have a little tinny music of your own, and don’t want to wear headphones in your own house (right on!), this is a cool little gadget.

Awesome Idea!! may be we will have bulbs changing the intensity of the light according to genre of music played (or something like that… :P )
But second thought!! will it be very costly to replace these bulbs :(
Nice idea, @Shribigb. Daft Punk + Bulb-Sound-Speaker = crafty strobe light.
Brilliant!
Very cool, though I’m not sure I like the idea of having to buy a new one every time the bulb burns out.
For another take on the idea have a look at Futuros.

There’s plenty of technology hidden inside and I’ve heard them demonstrated a few times, proper HiFi sound reproduction.
Hell, I use fluorescent lighting.
gah!
well does the speaker vibrate? cuz that might be bad and break the bulb if you have the volume up too high… lol
In the dark
eh
Yo simpletons, the bulb doesn’t radiate light, just sound.
There is no filament to break.
Where do I get light from if I replace my light bulb?
yo simpleton. there IS a filament, you can see it in the pics doofus. this is a bulb AND speaker
Devlin. The bulb *doesn’t* emit light. If you look at the picture you can clearly see that two leads of wire connect the speaker assembly to the bulb socket.
There’s no filament.
thats a wire, genius, not a filament. :) its not a bulb AND speaker its a bulb speaker… or a speaker blub. you can read more about it here: http://www.castiglionemorellidesign.it/scheda_projects.asp?id=56
Wow, you have to admit that is pretty amazing!

Do I have to “turn on” the lights with the lamp-switch to listen to music?
I have a question for all those who have enthusiastically said things like cool, awesome, amazing…
What would be the point? Why would you replace a light emitting bulb with a speaker? Why not just install a speaker somewhere else and remain “enlightened”?
If you were worried about wiring, you could just as easily, and far more practically, use a wireless speaker powered by batteries or A/C or solar(for the tree huggers). There are already plenty of wireless speaker systems on the market.
So, what’s the “bright idea” behind this? What is the excitement? Is it the irrational exuberance of youth or are people just stupid?
Can push music through more than one of these with a single iPod?
No you can’t because it doesn’t exist. It’s not a picture! It’s an artistic rendering.
Don’t you people know Photoshopped link bait when you see it?
Meanwhile, in the real world, wireless speaker systems do indeed push the audio through multiple speakers from a single source transmitter like an iPod.
Do I have to “turn on” the lights with the lamp-switch to listen to music??
Actually, it’s not a Photoshop rendering either. Photoshop is a 2D tool and these are ‘3D renderings.’ You can also call them ‘CG ‘(computer graphics) or even ‘3D CG’, but they’re not produced in Photoshop.
Wow, idea is so gay. I mean, unless you hate stereo sound, light and pocket cash. Then it’s awsome!
In other words, it’s perfect for people who own iPods!
yeah but can you play the music with the lights off?
here’s a suggestion: L.e.d. bulbs create very little heat and can still produce ample light so stick some of those in there.
word to your mother
i love sean
i am not bald
So if you controlled this non light-emitting speaker-bulb with a dimmer, does it change the volume?
tb is ruggedly bald.
this is useful. i could play my romantic love music AND have the lights out. it takes the focus of the danger zone…my head.
