Seagate releases an actual fix for freezing HDDs

Remember those issues Seagate was having? No, not those issues; everybody has those right now (except Apple and Google). I’m talking about the thousands upon thousands of drives that have been freezing up due to a firmware issue. Seagate released a “fix” a while ago that took fixed the problem by bricking the drive, which was, needless to say, poorly received.

They’ve now released a new fix, which should get things going again for those of you with faulty 1TB and 1.5TB drives. Anybody out there have the issue and want to report in on the fix’s efficacy?

  • The fix for the DiamondMax 22 models STM3500320AS, STM3750330AS, & STM31000340AS aren’t very efficacious at all… because the firmware updates for two of my hard drives (one of which is not working) hasn’t passed validation yet.

  • This fix doesn’t address a number of the drives that people have been complaining about for a few weeks now (namely the 1.5TB FreeAgent Desk that appears to be having the same drive hang-ups as the others). A number of very vocal owners have been looking for a solution for weeks now (http://is.gd/hgW5), but Seagate hasn’t yet admitted to a problem with those drives.

It’s a shame that Seagate already got credit for solving the problem when they still have a lot of customers hanging out to dry.

  • they’ve fixed nothing! my first drive went down a month ago and was fobbed off with lots of useless daitribe. now the second drive in mirror array is also turned invisible to bios and they expect me to package them up and send it to singapore at my expense, wait weeks to receive 2 new drives for what is their negligence. i don’t think so. they’ve known about the issue with baraccuda 7200.11 drives fr months anf their website has got more and more convoluted and difficult as time has progressed.
