This enormous picture, taken by David Bergman, was stitched together from 220 images taken on a Canon G10 mounted on a Gigapan panoramic imager system.
I think it turned out extremely well (check out the full-screen), owing in no small part to the photographer’s skill, of course, but also the bright, flat light that illuminated the whole scene equally and shadowlessly.
Obviously what most people will do is zoom in on Obama, but if you’re looking to count the hairs on his head you’ll be disappointed; with a wide-angle lens at that distance, you get detail but not detail; fortunately plain ol’ detail is quite good enough for discerning all the other interesting things in the picture. And considering it’s a picture of probably 50,000 people viewable in close-up, can you find:
- Cold-looking photographers crammed onto a tiny platform
- Waldo, with his head split in two
- Draco Malfoy’s father standing in a center aisle with a green hat
- A bunch of media cameras with their lights on, even though it’s broad daylight and they’re 100ft from the President
There’s lots of good stuff. You can’t download the whole thing, though, due to it being waaay too big.

Wow, this is really impressive. Technology never seizes to amaze me.
spell check never ceases to amaze me :)
Not that spell-check would have caught that one. :)
holy crap, i’ve not had this much fun in forever! i even found bruce springsteen! look slightly to the left of the front-center camera tower, the very first lamp post you see, there are 2 people in camo. The Boss is right between and behind them. here’s how i found him: http://www.flickr.com/photos/ifny/3214609905/
you need to get out more buddy.
How about the guy that got cut in half down by the base of the center tower?
yeah…pair of legs. that’s great
The resolution is simply incredible! I’ve heard about these super high rez cameras before but I’ve never really been able to experiment with their capabilities before, I’m completely speechless…
Impressive picture. I wonder when they will release the first 1 gigapixel cam.
So what’s with the huge blurred out section to the left. Censorship or protecting the undercover agents?
Any playing “Where’s The Terrorist”? I think i found him. From where Obama is, go directly up to the top set of bleachers, then on the front row of those bleachers, scroll left. He has his red garment on, and he looks like he is not enjoying his time in the cold either. Oh well, lol don’t flame me, i wont be back to read reply’s, bye bye.
this is an amazing photo of a historic event.
the winner……..
Great photo(s). What a bunch of glum, cold faces sitting up in the boxes though. Pretty funny to see a few with their eyes closed (like Justice Thomas) as Obama droned on and on and on. Michelle Obama must have froze her a## off with that skirt.
To big to download?
Someone should make a torrent for this!
