YouTube has officially enabled High Quality in embedded videos. The new embedded player sports a little HQ button in the expanded menu, which is strangely absent from YouTube’s on-site player. Hacking the code is no longer necessary; if you listen closely, you can hear the sound of hundreds of FAQs around the world crying out in horror as they are rendered obsolete.
One can only assume that they decided they were ready for the blast of traffic that will certainly result from the huge amount of embedded high-quality videos to come. Doubtless the stream pipe has to be a lot fatter for the HQ videos, but advances in compression efficacy have ensured that doubling the image quality doesn’t double the size of the video. The downloadable version whether you’re watching HD or SD is the same — that is to say, it’s the HD version no matter what. For Obama’s inauguration, it’s 95MB, which at 21 minutes long is about 600kb/s if my rough calculations are correct, just fine for streaming.
Test it out in the player below. You have to hit play before the HQ button shows. The shaky camera is not a function of the HD, just a very cold cameraman.
Unfortunately, there’s still no button that makes the comments high quality.

> there’s still no button that makes the comments high quality.
Sure there is. It’s the install button for this add-on:

I need a more stringent filter… something that blocks any YouTube comment containing an A, E, I, O, U, or possibly a Y.
’bout time they put in HD.
I don’t have that button :|
hmmmm same here?

Great article! And wow, you could not be any more correct with your “wish they had a hiqh quality comments button.” ;)

“Unfortunately, there’s still no button that makes the comments high quality.”
- A high quality comments button. Yes, yes, yes! That would be SOOO awesome. Just push the button, and the comments all go deep. Excellent.
In all seriousness we’re quite fortunate to get a fairly good number of intelligent comments on our videos these days.
Then again we have over 260 vids on YouTube now, and it wasn’t always that way. I’m sure comment quality has a lot to do with number of subscribers / active regular viewers. But it’s definitely a good thing.
Have an awesome day!
Dan
Hrm, I’ll need to test for HD for Ubuntube and other .tv sites. Thanks for the heads up.
:-)
Looks like you can also disable that search bar. Finally, YouTube.
Oh, it’s got an x now. Nice, I didn’t notice that. Now I can get screengrabs without having to use my lightning reflexes.
the search bar is still in but the hd is gone.
I like blip.tv more :D
lol @ comments comment. well played.
This is great news, well done Devin, we can now watch HD quality videos anywhere. Thanks YouTube.
Anyone know how to default the embedded player to HQ?
append both URLs in the embed code with
&ap=%2526fmt%3D18
If you want HD, its D22 on the end, not D18.
Is it really worth a blog post every time Youtube launches a feature that catches them up to other video sharing services? Would it not be more interesting to talk about what Blip or Vimeo is doing, then make a sidebar when YouTube plays “me too?”
Did they turn off &showsearch=0? Did not work for the first time when I embedded a youtube video this morning.
But, you still need to “hack the code” to force it to play in HQ (or HD), right? I don’t know that many users are going to know they can click in the bottom corner and change to HQ, so if you want them to see HQ, the workaround still applies.
Unless I’m missing something.
I agree about users not necessarily knowing to click the HQ button. What is the workaround you are referring to? Does this only apply to embedded videos?
I like the fact that you can ‘Turn the Lights Off’ whilst watching a video on their site :)
Is there any way to get the rating and original filename off the embedded videos? I think that looks tacky as hell. Please help
Is there a way to force HQ on embed? and getting rid of rating and original file name?
Wrong. Many videos don’t have the HQ option where you show it to be. It sucks file2hd is gone, you can’t get hq youtube videos anywhere anymore.
