Mad Magazine going quarterly

by Doug Aamoth on January 25, 2009

mad This April will bring the 500th issue of Mad Magazine and, starting with that issue, the publication will be moving from monthly to quarterly circulation.

Editor John Ficarra said in a statement, “The feedback we’ve gotten from readers is that only every third issue of Mad is funny. So we decided to just publish those.”

Quarterly issues will see a slight bump in pages, from 48 to 56. Mad Kids and Mad Classics will, unfortunately, be shut down entirely. This is just conjecture on my part but it may be that Mad uses the extra time between issues to flush out its online presence since, you know, the internet is kind of a big deal nowadays.

  • It makes perfect sense; now that George “What Me Worry” Bush is out of office, there’s going to be a lot less material and it’ll have to drop to quarterly. I’m surprised they’re staying in business at all. Probably just keeping it running so they can come back in 2012 when Jeb gets elected.

C’mon, you have to admit that it’s a little scary just how much GW looked like (and acted like) Alfred E. Newman.

  • What a shame, MAD mags have been printed since 1952. All in all, MAD mags, being made quarterly are a shame. but its better than nothing, and yes it does sadden me greatly because I collect them.
