The various iterations of the PSP have seen success, perceived as only modest success due to the runaway sales of the DS. The PSP 3000 actually had some real changes in it, not unlike the DSi, but some think that a more radical reinvention of Sony’s underappreciated handheld is in the cards.
IGN has it from “several credible sources” (aren’t they all?) that the new PSP will feature a widescreen, multi-touch capable touchscreen. There has to be a better way of saying that. A wide multi-touch screen. Moving on — that would make some sense, as Sony ganked the Wii’s motion controls right away and perhaps now feels it’s time to ape the DS and iPhone.
A survey sent out (captured here) also asked whether people would be more likely to buy a PSP if it had
- GPS
- A comic/book-downloading service
- Dual analog sticks
- Bluetooth
- A full keyboard
- A hard drive
- “The ability to access the internet from any location,” in other words a wireless 3G modem. This one is actually interesting.
It’s all very speculative, of course, but it’s fun to think about. A 3G-enabled handheld game console with a multi-touch screen… there may be some legal issues with Apple.

hard drive is not needed.
full keyboard shall be a add-on.
bluetooth is crap, not needed.
GPS…. i have my phone for that. ^^
dual analog is much welcomed..
ebook….. hahaha. i’m mixed about that.
but soon.. psp will be a full fledged controller with a screen in the middle. (reminds me of dreamcast controller… XD)
If PSP have GPS, A comic/book-downloading service, Dual analog sticks, Bluetooth, A full keyboard, A hard drive, wireless 3G modem then difinatlely one would like to buy PSP.
Cool, lets hope the roumors are true and we’ll have the PSP2 equiped with a nice touchscreen..
I’m writing about this in Romanian :d
A PSP with all those features would be a technically brilliant piece of kit.
Although it would be expensive, perhaps too expensive for the masses who would probably stick with a cheaper alternative that does most of what they want, i.e. play games, without being forced to pay for a clutch of features that they are rarely, if ever, going to use.
Wait a minute…
Fully agreed. I would have to say it would be nice to see the dual analog sticks and the 3g modem…maybe a keyboard accessory like someone pointed out above. But the increase in price that would come with the rest of the features probably wouldn’t be worth it.
1. The GPS should be an optional add on where you can get it at the store and get free software updates.
2.Full Keyboard should be another add on just like the one for the PS3 or they could make it slide out like the sidekick
3.Dual Analog sticks is a must
4.Bluetooth is a great feature so you can link it to a headset although it would drain alot of the battery
5.A hard drive is needed for demos cause I really hate those memory sticks
6.3G should be a monthly priced service maybe around $5 a month
7.Comic books=”lol@whoever wanted this”
honestly, i’m a homebrew user, so these features would be sensational.
honestly i don’t think the HDD is needed since you can get an 8GB memory stick for fairly cheap. the 3G would be very nice just for general web browsing, and hopefully would come with a larger cache so the psp could actually handle more streaming content.
bluetooth could be used for so much more than just a set of headphones… go do some research and see what all bluetooth is used for now.
dual analog sticks would be so sexy.
i’ve been trying to find a good full keyboard mod for months. carrying around a laptop all the time for word processing is annoying, and there are many of the keyboards out there that use bluetooth (see where i was going with that) that are compact and portable that would allow me to use my psp instead.
GPS would be nice again, fewer freaking boxes that i need to carry. although i do agree that this should be an addon.
the comic book download would be nice with the touchscreen. things like the Heroes comics are nice to have on the psp to read wherever, though navigating them as saved images can be such a pain.
and again… an iphone like screen would just be too sexy for words.
the real thing i want to see is an increase in the processor and ram capabilities, even if they just added a feature that would access a section of the memory stick to use as RAM. so long as it would be specifiable so i could put like 1GB of my stick to ram usage. something similar to the ramboost that vista has.
Why not add a simple phone while your at it
A Built in Digital TV Tuner…(No Add On) Since Casio portable TV’s got the axe, the PSP would make a good portable TV.
* GPS
Not needed
* A comic/book-downloading service
Allow 3rd party apps like this,
* Dual analog sticks
No opinion
* Bluetooth
Needed so you can support bluetooth peripherals, headsets, so it can be a good MP3 player, etc.
* A full keyboard
Needs full on screen touch keyboard. Doesn’t need physical keyboard as long as it has regular PSP buttons.
* A hard drive
1 Gig more then used by OS needed, 4G preferred. Make this version backwards compatible with PSP disks, but dropp support in long run.
* “The ability to access the internet from any location,” in other words a wireless 3G modem. This one is actually interesting.
Wifi needed, great wifi support, make it work with all random varieties found. No need for anythign requiring a monthly fee like a 3G modem. You can’t tie to ATT or Verizon, and you can’t afford to support both. A theoretical card slot to be filled by the right 3G modem would be awesome, do that in a few years.
if theres not two screens its OBSOLETE if theres no touch ascreen its OBSOLETE if it doesnt have in stant loading sreaming its OBSOLETE
DSi is the only next gen hand held to own FACT
i’d just like to say that wiiboy101 is an ignorant, sadly mistakin idiot.
if anything all of those attributes that you claim to make things that lack them “obsolete” are going to go out of style relatively soon. everything is touch screen these days and frankly it’s getting a bit old quite rapidly. with every new touch release it loses a little bit more of its novelty.
in my own opinion:
the dual analog is a necessity
GPS would be quite handy, but not really needed
internet isn’t needed either since you will need a wifi hotspot to use it and if you’re at a place with one chances are you have your computer with you, or you have nothing to be on the internet for.
the keyboard could be useful but, again, not a necessity.
it’s a damn game system people. let the iPhone do all the fancy stuff and remember what you bought the system for in the first place: to PLAY GAMES.
ok for starters dual analogs is needed BADLY
for the gps why dont the just use the 3g to access it as well as ‘anywere internet capabilities’
put the keyboard on a touch screen like the ipod has but not for anything else.
a hard drive is just stupid
but for the 3g capabilities how would you access them? you could have a modem built in but that still wont let you access 3g. if tou havent noticed all 3g devices need a 3g/hsdpa sim card. so like someone said why not add a call and text program that is optional?
bluetooth is stupid you have wifi to send stuff and connect accessories
and maybe a better OS.
Imma wait to c wat happens but a keyboard would be tight n also a gps syetem would be nice.Bluetooth would be cool to pass vids n music to each other. A full keyboard to type faster. “The ability to access the internet from any location,” in other words a wireless 3G modem. Would be real nice for if u don’t have internet. Kind of like a cell
To start off,
dual analog sticks – needed badly
Touch screen – add an on screen keyboard ans we’ll talk
GPS – WTF?? why do i need that on a game system
3G – awesome, but wouldn’t it cost money?
Bluetooth – i like it.
Hard disk – we’re talking about a PORTABLE game system, i would probably say no.
I don’e want it to get expensive.
PSP is one of my favorite mobile devices, but yes it does lack a lot, what I would like to see in the new PSP is of course the duel anolog sticks,
3G – I would pay for the service, I dont have a cell nore a labtop so this would be perfect!!! I agree – needs a bigger cache and ram.. please!
touch screen – very cool, but I really dont like touch screens… and on a wide screen like this, it be kind of hard to use because my thumbs cant really navigate through the entire screen (keyboard use).. ud have to hold the psp with one hand and try to type with the other. (can be fixed if they lay a half the letters on the bottom left side of the screen and other on the right).. still though.
GPS – cool, most phones do not have GPS.. and im sure the PSP would make a good one due to its large screen.
OS – its good but yeah, please make better.. maybe like the google phones OS, would be cool.
