Hublot Big Bang King Power: As my 3-year-old son would say, this is “unasseptiple”

When Hublot first launched the Big Bang I was I was totally down with the watch. It had a unique style and size as well as a nice pedigree and cost about $15K, not horrible for a watch of this caliber. Now they’re just getting greedy.

The King Power is just a fat watch with a weird, all-black face that almost renders it useless. This model has a ceramic bracelet, which is unusual, and is water resistant to 10 ATM. It’s basically using a standard jumping hands split-second movement from La Joux-Perret. How much is all of this pleasure? $22,000, not counting the gazelle-like Russian models you have to hire to walk into the shop so you can look sufficiently douchey when you pick this up.

Here is how the movement works:

That little dial there jerking around like an epileptic shows eights of a second. You can also split the seconds i.e. stop one hand and let the other hand keep going.

My problem with this watch? Hublot and Bell&Ross are falling into the same habit of making the same thing only in a different color over and over again. It’s uncreative and boring. It also makes it hard for people like me, people who want to pull this industry out of the douche ghetto, to convince non-watch fans that they should explore the hobby. Watches are things of beauty but like all beautiful things, the commercial instinct more often than not drives out the things that make it good. Here’s hoping that Hublot can pull back and fix this.

  • How long before your book is done?

  • the “King Power” is a new line, and this is just the first model which happens to be an “All Black”. All Blacks exist in all their lines (Big Bang, King, Classic). There’s already a second model of the “Power” that is more legible, and countless more will follow. so don’t put it down because it’s an “All Black”, that’s just the first model of the new line. (I happen to own the original “Big Bang All Black” and believe me, it’s stunningly beautiful and not “useless” at all, legibility is usually excellent!).

  • btw the bracelet of the Power is still rubber :)

  • I was about to order an AP until the salesman at Watches of Switzerland suggested that I check out Hublot, a brand I hadn’t paid attention to before. I was in the shop ages and I am totally sold on the big bang 48mm especially the all black editions. To appreciate how beautiful and how different these timepieces are you need to put it on and not just see a photo. For me it beats AP and I can see why this brand is in greater demand all the time. As long as they can get the model I want I will place my order this week.

  • After the success of Hublot’s Invisible Visibility concept in the All Black series of the Big Bang, BLACK became the Hublot house color. No wonder that they now launched this new model in this version first. Makes perfect sense. And as someone else mentioned, other variations will follow, no worries.

Anyway, an extremly understated luxury piece, subtle, yet full of power and sportiness. Amazing if you ask me.

  • I think this watch is sick
