Intel and AMD to power PS4, Xbox 720, and WiiII?

A little creative thinking over at the Inquirer has led them to suggest that Nvidia may get left out in the cold come the new generation of gaming consoles. Intel and AMD are set to split the spoils between them, leaving Nvidia (in its glory and its ego) to play with the PC market, which, as we are constantly being reminded, is dying.

It seems that there’s some bad blood between Sony and Nvidia, and some insiders have said that the GPU contract has gone over to Intel. Kind of puts the lid back on Nvidia’s can of whoop-ass. Similarly, Microsoft may be switching to AMD GPUs for grudge-related reasons. The Wii2, or WII, or Wiii, or Twii, will likely be sporting AMD hardware because ATI has been Nintendo’s partner for a while.

Add into this the fact that AMD is probably making rock-bottom bids right about now due to the fact that if they don’t make some money they’re going to be counting their stock’s value in pennies — on their hands. I’d certainly like to see a comeback like this.

  • I agree only AMD, microsoft 360 already has AMD/ATI chips, Wii def, and if Sony just canned Nvidia, well we know who’s gonna pick up the pieces. As far as Intel, the game systems don’t use a usual AMD or INTEL processor i don’t think they’ll be entering the market unless Larrabee can compete with ATI in the graphics sector.

  • What about the rest of the story. I don’t remember where but it seems that the original xbox was a big loser for nvidia and they did not want to get tied up with microsoft again they turned down the 360.

Most of the console makers request completely custom chips I’m not sure it would be good for AMD to take on that task when they are hemoraging from a bad economy already.

Also I’m not so sure intel has what it takes IBM stole the show for all three of the current consoles. There was the Cell for PS3 IBM, a three core powerpc relative for 360 IBM, and single core powerpc relative for the wii IBM

  • For both AMD and Intel the are already making this type of chip. (integrated graphics) I think this will help out AMD/ATI and for nVIDIA well they should have learned that you have to be nice or dominate everything before saying negative things. Price\performance wise both AMD and Intel are killing nVIDIA.
The PS3 already has a powerhouse GPU/CPU I cant wait to see the PS4. As for the Xbox I hope ATI can come up with more power cheaply and close the gap between the two consoles.
And go Wii, have nothing that can even be compaired to either consoles performance wise and still compete with “innovation”. Its fun, horrible graphics and physics but still fun. I have all 3 and I spend most time on PC (60%) Wii (25%) PS3 (15%).

  • Intel got the contract,(like and amd would anyway) and intel is using there 80 core processor. I know it sounds crazy but it is that truth.

  • HI THERE I HOPE THE NEW GAMING CONSOLE WILL USE SOLID STATE FLASH DRIVE FLASH MEMORY IS FASTER BECUASE NO ONE IS LOOKING AT 10,000 OR 15,000 RPM HARD DRIVES OR LASER HARD DRIVES

  • HI THERE I FOUND X-BOX 720 SPECS A 3.6 GHZ CPU 4 GB OF RAM AND TRIPPLE 10,000 RPM RAPTORS 2 74 GB AND 1 1.5 TB SOO THE X-BOX 720 WILL BE FOR HARD CORE GAMERS DREAM

  • HI THERE ARE YOU SURE THEY WONT BE USEING BORG CPUS
