I live in England, and I have never supported the ID card scheme, because I don’t trust the govement with anything now:

Ecomany: screwed
Enviroment: fucked
National Health care: slow are red tape heavy
centralisation: unefficvite but populare with pen pushers
Data protection: USBS and laptops containing personal data of people at risk, soldiers secret service files left on trains and stolen from cars!
ID cards:Don’t get me started, read the adove

Here In Indiana

we have drivers ID’s with a bar code system on them, but I have never once seen anyone capable of reading the bar code…. so likely the same issue

Yes an interesting point, especially for the high tech biometic data and such… BUT WHEN HAS MY DRIVING LICENSE ever needed a “reader” other than the human eye??

It is insanity for any people to support government bailouts for large corporations especially banks. I mean why do taxpayers have to give the banks money so they can lend it back to us with interest. These real ID programs are a ludicrous violation of your privacy. If you Brits had any balls you would stand up to her majesty and say to hell with your IDS I refuse.

The government didn’t forget to buy card readers, the cards are being instituted early to get the population used to them. With readers being rolled out much later in the scheme.
There is also the probability that the cards can be read by scanning machines using RFID chips within them.

You guys are so blind .. this is no blunder. You really think a government devious and authoritarian enough to install 5 million CCTV cameras is going to be dumb enough to “forget” half of a 50 billion dollar big brother operation? The readers were never meant to be given to the police/authorized personnel. The readers are in spy satellites. These are RFID chips, they can be read from any distance if the reading device is powerful enough. Your every move, every purchase, every breath will be tracked on a global “google earth” style interface, a la Bourne Identity. Soon, the card will be replaced by a chip, planted underneath your skin, without which it will be impossible to buy or sell. Anyone dissenters will have their chip turned off.

Meanwhile a carefully engineered crash of the american debt-slave economy will trigger a crash in the global economy. We already see it.. the whole world is fooled by this Globalism “Consume..Consume” zombie mode, and most people live in debt. Then comes the world govt.

This entire story is a complete fabrication, regardless of the ethical implications you are all raising, ID cards aren’t going to be allocated to civilians for years, if ever.

They haven’t spent that money on it, the whole system is still in discussions.

I say everyone move to a different country and see how you feel about their government for a few years, then laugh about other countries.

All governments do what they can to please most of the people most of the time, I don’t like the British government, but at least they’re still trying under all the scrutiny they get.

This exact same type of handout was proposed way back in 1935 in Canada during the Great Depression by a party called the Social Credit. It never got implemented then because it was considered illegal.

Being from the UK I am appalled at how the government is so keen on tracking our every move and making us pay for ID cards despite their complete lack of data security. Almost every month there are press stories of some minister or authority losing a laptop or CD that has data of names/addresses/bank accounts etc on it. They could cut a lot of crime by not letting in every immigrant who wants to sponge off the state. The UK is becoming a very unpleasant place to live with our freedoms and national identity being gradually destroyed for fear of offending minorities. In the US you can fly the stars and stripes with pride. In the UK you get told to take it down because it may be seen as racist!
