While Intel is working on taking on the GPU sector (and may just have a deal with Sony to do it), its main rival, Nvidia, is looking to get into the x86 processor business. The video hardware giant is assembling a team from scratch to make a competitor to the Intel and AMD’s CPUs — but doesn’t seem to care that the technology is proprietary and must be licensed from the very companies they’re trying to overthrow.
I’m no legal expert, so I won’t get into any nitty-gritty, but it’s safe to say that if Nvidia does manage to put together an x86-compatible chip, it’ll never see the light of day. Intel will immediately sue them so hard and with such clear legal standing that they’ll be toast before they can come up with a name for the thing. Should be interesting.

As a share holder in NVDA I must applaud and welcome all of their efforts to make this industry competitive. I do hope however they dont get into any legal issues since till recently my shares are movin on up. ( The Jeffersons)
Care to explain why AMD can do it and NVidia cannot?
I know it’s prob taboo to ask but.. What’s the source on this news? NVIDIA?
graphics cards > cpus.
No, no; graphics cards more or less ARE CPUs.
There is a huge difference between graphics cards and cpu’s note that the unverified article says they are putting a team together to take on this challenge.
I think its a great idea, while i don’t expect great things early on the graphics industry seems quicker to try new things and general cpu design might benefit from gpu advances.
I think VIA also has the patent and x86 and there are solutions to achieve compatibility with x86 (see Transmeta Crusoe and Efficeon).
Ummm…really? Don’t think Intel would have any basis for a legal throwdown. There’s this great site called “Wikipedia.” They’ve got a wealth of mostly accurate information about a lot of things. You guys should check it before you write damning posts like this. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/X86_architecture#Other_manufacturers
Nvidia hasn’t paid for a license… it would be “pirated” hardware.
uhhhm thats very compititve market
give them a chance to prove their
efforts
