Time to indulge your inner animator. Home animation site GoAnimate is officially announcing tomorrow that they have obtained the rights from CBS to allow you to create your own Star Trek animated stories. Sounds pretty cool to me.
From the press release:
Go!Animate is a free online animation tool that enables everyone — no artistic ability required — to create their own animated stories and share them with the world.
And now, after signing a licensing deal with CBS Consumer Products, Go!Animate is giving users the ability to create their own STAR TREK animated adventures. This is the first ever officially-sanctioned use of STAR TREK material for the purpose of user-generated content within an online medium.
As a result, Go!Animate gives millions of dedicated Star Trek fans a tool to creatively express themselves and share with the global STAR TREK community.
So now, not only can you write your own Star Trek slashfic, you can actually animate them too!

Holy crap. This is freakin awesome!
I found the site and the service rather difficult to use and the payoff too small. I hope it succeeds, but I think it will have a tough time gaining mass audience appeal.
I think the ideal service for mass appeal is something like animoto. Extremely easy to use and all the hard work gets done for you and the end product looks pretty good.
With this, it is difficult to use, you still have to do a lot of the hard work, and the end product does not look that great.

Thanks for the feedback.
We also have pre-made eMessages that you can easily customize and send to friends. With these, you don’t need to come up with your own story and stufff.

This looks involved. I’d rather get the episodes on Hulu.
I can see how 8 year olds could get into this though.
Im 27 and i’ll get into it! Star Trek is the shit!

Oh that’s cool then. I love star trek. Normally I only have really crappy things to say about startups, but yours is good. Did you know Hulu is blocked in Canada via IP, perhaps you should consider blocking your service to Canadians too and remind them what type of oppressive society they live in.
Check your licensing contract and make sure it was international before letting Canadians access it.
As a side note, Mike Arrington was never able to get zip.ca to take off because they wouldn’t let him stream movies in Canada to offer a similar service to Netflix. Licensing contracts for rights restrict your regional boundaries just like franchises.
I think it’s good though, because until places like Canada declare independence, they should be punished to an extent.
What are you babbling about? The fact that a license you obtain in the US isn’t valid in Canada destroys whatever your little rant was supposed to be about.
Just signed up, but there are no Star Trek options under the available themes.
It’s not available until tomorrow.
It’s available now. :)
Well, I think it’s pretty cool to let us animate a Star Trek cartoon. Where’s the voices – that’s all that’s missing.
Good for making Viral videos. :)
To boldy animate where no one has animated before…
so. all the temporary goanimate staff are commenting today huh
It’s pretty cool, but I miss the sound.
WOW! This is awesome. I will try my hand at animation! :)
yes very good app,
perfect for young people so perfect for viral
Is this some kind of marketing strategy to get more people interested in Star Trek because the new movie is coming out this year?
Anyway, it looks interesting. I have to try it out..
Star Trek is huge with some fringe culture groups, some going as far as publishing books and magazines in their fantasy Star Trek themed universes, such as the numerous gay themed short stories available with a simple google search. What, if anything, is GoAnimate.com doing to prevent / support / isolate this popular yet unpopular use of their licensed content?
Used GoAnimate.com for a little while. The site seems ok on initial glance. But fails badly once you start making semi-complicated animations. A lot of the contents on there are copyrighted materials. The sounds downloaded from SoundSnap are most likely obtained without permission, and certainly without copyright. The pictures seem to be legit. And it is so slow!!! Stop using the Flex framework. It is so bloated.
Set phasers to stunning!
This site is good!! Ive been on it for a long time (8 months) I think it is cool how big there getting and I know they are going to succeed
great job launching the new theme Alvin ( and the rest of the team of course) ;o)
I am having a ton of fun with it,
all the best
