Looks like the answer to this is yes, but not well. Plus, you need to email them to the device at $0.10 a piece or email them to a service that will convert them for free and email them back to you. Then you have to load them though the USB charge port. Apparently, the SD slot is gone.
If you have previously placed an order for Kindle 1, and have not yet received it, your order will automatically be upgraded to Kindle 2. You need to do nothing.
I hope that Amazon will be smart and offer the software update to the Kindle 1 owners as well and not take the Apple road by forcing people to upgrade their hardware to get new software (iPod 5th generation to iPod 5th Generation version 2).
As for Kindle 2- Beautiful. Just wish I had the money…Also there’s something special about having an actual library…Perhaps this would be more worth it if all my normal books came with an e version?
The one thing that I find interesting here is the newspaper and magazine subscriptions. Looks like this could replace a large pile of paper I have at home. Still not sold on the “book” concept yet as I still like the feel of my paper-based volumes :)
I own several print magazines and we’ve played with converting them to Kindle editions. In short, current eBook formats are extremely poor at rendering magazine layouts. For anything to be readable on the Kindle, Mobireader, etc, it has to completely be re-designed for the limited display capabilities of these devices. Anything beyond a simple in-line picture and text will not work. This, imho, is a huge step backwards that will assure that magazines will not be taking this device, or any ereader, seriously.
Also, our web site was approved for Kindle RSS delivery back when 1.0 launched. Three times Amazon dropped the ball in completing their side of the hookup. Granted, our name isn’t New York Times, but for having the lofty goal of getting all written material on their device, I’d say they’re falling fall short of that on the human side of the equation.
Looks like the SD card slot is gone. Can anyone confirm? Looks like a great device, but it still doesn’t look like its what I want. I really want a document reader that can read ebooks, not an ebook reader that sort of reads documents. Needs native PDF at least. I’d want to be able to load up my docs on an SD card from work and read them on the train ride home.
Looks like a great device for book readers, but not what I’m looking for.
Waiting for more information.
Thanks for being there for all of us, John!
Harvey / KindleBoards
I’m on the waiting list and I can’t wait to hear the news about the new kindle.
Finally, Please let the price be $249 :)
Why do your postings read an hour ahead? Are you liveblogging this from Halifax?
I just hope that this time it is available worldwide…
The new Kindle is for sale on Amazon’s website already.
So much for ScribbleLive…your “live” blogging went dead at 11:09. I’m switching over the Engadget.
Cool, thanks for stopping by.
700 times more storeage? Do you mean 7 times?
charge via mini-usb?
Text to speech, Dragon it speech back to text. Copyright / format issues—-gone.
But will it read .pdf files?

This is a deal breaker for me.
I just bought mine. Says it will be delivered on 2/25.

ScribbleLive is working just fine for me!

Yes.. Buy the book and get the e-version with it. Best of ALL worlds !

No cover comes with Kindle 2. They should have reduced the price.
Thanks so much! I can’t wait till February 24th. Already checked Amazon and everything is changed for the new Kindle.
What about folders?

Just bought mine – will be delivered on the 26th.
No SD memory slot. Big mistake.
Can you guys load a demo of the text-to-speech feature? This might be a good gift for my sight-impaired grandparents if that feature works well.
