What a day. First Barnes & Noble is a jerk to me, then I get the red ring of death. Oh, and Sirius XM may be going under. Isn’t everything just peachy?
It’s like this: I was watching a DVD last night in my Xbox 360, and all of a sudden—these things are always “all of a sudden”—the screen turned all fuzzy, then it froze all fuzzy. Then we got the telltale three red rings. (Sorry, I didn’t think to grab my camera.) Jesus H. Christ, no!
Then today I figure, “let’s see just how broken this thing really is,” and put in GTA IV. The game loads up fine, then two or so minutes later, bam! Fuzzy frozen screen all over again. No RROD this time, but I know I’m just playing with fire at this point.
The writing’s on the wall: I’m going to have to buy a new Xbox 360, preferably in time for Street Fighter IV next week. Then again, give how I play games nowadays—pop it in, play for half an hour or so, then never play again—I’m wondering if I should instead just save the $200. Maybe I’ll luck out and I can grab an Xbox 360 Arcade from Circuit City on the cheap. See, silver lining!

I guess its not in warranty then? That sucks. Just 2 weeks after I bought my first one I got a ring of death (maybe it was the 4 rings, can’t remember) and I flipped out. After checking it out I found out it meant a cable was only half plugged in and everything has been cheery since then :D
Did you install Microsoft’s latest update to the Xbox 360? That seems to be causing many 360’s to behave similarly to yours, and many end up getting the Red Ring Of Death. Read the official Xbox forums and you’ll see what I mean.
I installed the stupid update and got the RRoD shortly thereafter. I’m shipping it to Microsoft to get it repaired. Many people in my same situation are fuming, especially since Microsoft denies that their latest update caused this problem.
Same thing happened to me, after the update. I’m going to have to buy an Arcade to replace it I guess.
Don’t buy a new xbox. Same thing happen to me and I call the help line.
If you go into your storage device settings, at the bottom of the screen, select the Y button. Then you do a button pushing seassion with X, right shoulder, Left shoulder, X. It will clear you memory cash. Just turn off your console and turn it back on. Mine has been fine since.
Forgot a step. The operator who helped out had me removing my router receiver and the hard drive before proceeding.
yeah, mine dumps right into the RROD now, won’t even boot up to the dashboard.
If you’re getting the Red Ring of Death (three flashing red rings) and your system is less than 3 years old Microsoft will repair your console for free.
Not free. $100.00 foy mine, just over 1 yr old. I wound up sending my system in 3 times. Each time I got it back, it worked for 2 hrs or so. Then when I turned it on the next day RRoD! But the last ime I got it back, it has worked great.
Soooo… when did Crunch Gear turn into Nick DeLeon’s personal whining diary? Can we get some REAL content please?
I don’t get it… your x360 dies on you and your first thought is to buy another one? Are you THAT rich that you can continue to spend money on a machine that is well known for the RRD?
Why don’t you get a PS3? Sure, you’ll spend a $100 bucks more than usual, but that’s the only time you’ll have to spend good money on a machine that will last you at least 10 years.
But I guess some are fanatical about the X360… so they will stick with it regardless of it being a money pit.
Must resist temptation to call you a fanboy, because you do speak some sense.
Anyway, I got RROD while doing the NXE update. Left it a few hours and it was fine when I next turned it on. The writing was on the wall though, and a week or so later it kicked the bucket.
I’d had my box for about 2.5 years, so I was still within my extended warranty. Sent the thing for repair, and they helpfully informed me that instead of repairing it, they replaced it because it was to wrecked.
From my point of view, i’d be happy for my Box to die every 2.5 years, since what then happens is basically a free upgrade, and a months free xbox live.
I’m in the same boat, and going to get a new one too. However, I’m going to pick up the $199 Arcade edition. I’m certainly not that rich either, but I do miss my gaming. And frankly, I’m not fond of the game line up for the PS3. Not to mention the money I have invested in games for the 360.
So many people to respond to!
@Ed: No, Ed, I’m not “that rich,” but I can swing $200 every once in a while.
@Yanick: Thanks for the suggestion, but I turned it on this morning and now it goes straight to the rrod, and not the fuzzy/frozen screen from the other night.
@Mike Hawk: Calm down, sir. It’s not like I wrote a post about how I broke a nail on the subway. Believe it or not, the rrod is relevant to us here at CG. So please take your negativity elsewhere if that’s a problem.
So yeah, I’ll just get another one today. Hopefully the new Arcade units are a little more reliable. Thanks for your suggestions and sympathies, everyone.
Nich because you are buying yet another 360 I hope it dies on you even sooner than your last one.
mine recently died too – its at the repair ctr right now. I had it for juuust under 3 years so I got lucky, both in warranty and how long it lasted.
sorry msoft, I loved your system but I’m going ps3 for blu-ray.
I’m sorry man, I’d lose my fucking mind if that happened to me. What did you have a pro edition?
I has hug Nicholas? lmao
“No, Ed, I’m not “that rich,” but I can swing $200 every once in a while. ”
^^^ Not me dewd… not when I have lots of games to buy (and they’re not exactly cheap) plus those bills that need a payin’
I just was sayin’ that you should buy a PS3 due to the fact that you are unlikely to have to deal with that RROD crap with said console.
I agree that the X360 has good reasons to stick with it. But there has to be a point where enough is enough. Unlike MS, were not made out of money.
And MS needs to get their act together. Its been quite a while since the machine came out. Its ridikulas that people still have to deal with this issue.
I’m just about sure in my assumption, that what Nicholas is pondering on doing (buy another xbox 360) is the only, if not, main reason xbox 360 has more units sold than the PS3. Ive read about this situation countless times, about people’s xboxs RRODing, and instead of sending it in to get fixed…they just go buy another one. I can definitely see the current 7 million unit lead, and coupled with a one year head-start over PS3 as a direct result of this.
I found this to fix the red rings of death u all should visit this side it really amazing to fix the red light
