Video: Video game effects meet F1 racing

Every year there are new rules and regulation for Formula One racing and this video goes through some of the more cosmetic changes. Forget those. Watch the video after the jump for a great, non-gearhead explanation of KERS. This system seems totally out of Burnout; seriously. The Kinetic Energy Recovery Systems recovers energy that would normally be wasted on braking and converts it into electricity for an extra boost of power that can be used on-demand later during the race. Sounds crazy enough that I might actually watch the full season of F1 this year.

  • I’m also intrigued by how the KERS system will affect the racing. As far as I know, the KERS system is optional, and if you choose not to run it, you can save weight by not having it onboard your car (batteries as we all know, are heavy).

It has been suggested that any benefit from the extra ‘turbo boost’ per lap will be negated by the extra weight being carried, which will affect tyre wear and fuel consumption, and probably increase wear on the engine/drivetrain.

Like any good game mechanic though, this system will need balancing, so KERS is not too much of a (dis)advantage.
