Inspired by the lonesome death of Palm OS I dusted off my old Palm V and found that I had thrown away my docking cable and accessories. Saddened, I took to the Internet only to find an excellent aggregation of actual accessories on Amazon and eBay. A few clicks later and I am now the proud owner of a Targus Essentials Kit for Palm V, one of the best handhelds in the business.
Like most old technology, I’m having a heck of a time syncing this thing right now but a few more tries and I should get it. It’s quite a bit of fun just firing this monster up and even if I can’t get it to work it’s nice to see how far we’ve come in a few short years.

What gadgetry have you resurrected recently?

go on ebay and buy yourself a newton for $5, that should satisfy your urge for old junk.
Especially old junk that was used to call in air strikes back in the day.
Buying newtons at Defcon is so much fun… such interesting software is left on them!
man, must be a slow news day…
Everything I’ve ever owned by Targus has broken within a month – the build quality of their stuff is horrible.
that looks antique.
I had a Palm V. And several other Palms and Handsprings. I haven’t been without some kind of pda since 1999. The form factor of the V was perfect.
I even bought a Newton on eBay a few years ago. Sold it on eBay for a small profit. They have a loyal following to this day. You can’t get one for $5. The Newton was huge and heavy and didn’t sync. Basically useless as a pda, but it sure was fun to play around with.
I still have and use my Palm T|X, after replacing the problematic plastic digitizer with an aftermarket glass one.
My Palm V circa 99 still has a better PIM than any of modern smartphones (iPhone, Dash with WinMo 6, and BB Curve OS 4.5). Sad.
Ah, remember the good old days of sending your contact info to a co-worker via IR, then giggling like six-year-olds because it was soooo cool?
Hopefully the Pre will bring Palm back to those days…
… or IR battleships. What has happened to those days?
I’m still using my Palm IV – bought reconditioned in 2004 for $10 with a fold-out keyboard and serial sync cable. My only problem is that my laptop doesn’t have serial RS232 or Infrared to sync with.
Would an RS232 to USB cable work? Its sad that nothing uses IR anymore.
Let me know if you want my Palm V keyboard. It looks like this: http://www.amazon.com/PalmOne-Portable-Keyboard-Palm-Handhelds/dp/B00004RC2I
To Ian:
There are USB Sync cables around for Palm Vs. EBay probably has them. I bought mine from Radio Shack -of all places – about 5 years ago.
