Previously invite-only, the public beta of Quake Live – Quake III in your browser! – will open today. A countdown timer on the website indicates that we’ll all be able to “frag” each other, as you kids say, at around 11:00 PM Eastern tonight. Let’s all go fragging together, shall we?
UPDATE: The countdown clock seems to be ticking down faster than normal. I initially had it pegged at 11:00 but now (at 3:30 Eastern) it appears to be closer to 9:00 and I’d expect that the actual time will keep getting earlier and earlier. Either that or I’m trapped in a wormhole. Whatever the case it looks like we can play sooner rather than later, so that’s good.
UPDATE 2: Quake Live is up! Also, we got the following info from reader Steve Jabs…
Hey guys… Im in line waiting on their queue to download Quake Live.
Yes, you do have to download it. And no… It does not work on a Mac.
It is live though and I would suggest people get in line soon so they aren’t behind about a million and a half people.
So there you have it. You DO have to download it and it doesn’t work on Macs. And now to get in line — ooh, only 9400 people ahead of me. Thanks for sending this in, Steve.

Well… there goes my night!
I honestly have been waiting a very long time for this! What they really need to do though is get some old abandonware titles remade for browser play.
I suggest a CG Fan Frag Fest sometime this week!
The math as I figured it (from the countdown) also works out to I think 2:30(ish)AM EST and 11:30(ish)PM west coast. That is if it is running in seconds.
I agree with everything you just said — waiting, abandonware, CG Fan Frag Fest — everything. We’ll set something up this week.
Awesome! I can’t wait!
“What they really need to do though is get some old abandonware titles remade for browser play.”
We tried that approach with numerous studios & publishers 1.5 years ago and even used early builds of Quake Live as an example, many of them are as short-sighted as the music execs.
Actually it’s at 7pm EST tonight.
at 7pm last night they posted on their twitter that there was 24h left
Even better!!
the countdown is in HH:MM:SS
I can see the work load pile up already…
I’ll see you on there tonight!
look for Coffee4cr if we have names
Wow! Can’t wait to call myself last.fm. Who’ll step up to the plate and call themself TechCrunch so that I can kick their ass?
There goes the GDP…
The end time is the epoch time of 7PM EST.
Does anybody know if it’ll run on Mac OSX ?
Does anybody know if it’ll run on OS X ?
I read that they are working on a Mac version. Id software is a supporter of the Mac community. I am eagerly waiting for this so I can toss the PC for good. For whatever reason it did kill my router connection a few times lol.
30,844 in line. 11pm est. is gonna be crazy.
mine just keeps going down by the thousands until i get to about 1500 then it freezes, and why the @#$% doesn’t it work on a mac?
They shuld let you download it from another site so there isn’t a three-hour queue
hey if u guys see me in the game, my name is captianjroot
hey, still in line position is now: 7338
Just finished a session. This turned out fantastically!
I worked with the startup company that provided some of the early technology for the match making on Quake Live. id Software has practically made it their own so I hesitate to call it “our technology” anymore, but I know a few of the guys @ id and evidently they’re being HAMMERED with traffic right now and it brought the queue down..
I’ve been beta testing Quake Live since Dec. 07 and it’s pretty awesome. If you’re having problems, I definitely recommend you check back.
id Software has done a fantastic job with Quake Live, huge props to the entire team there for their dedication to PC gaming. Lets hope a Mac version is soon to follow.
liar
my queue is still counting down
My guess is they have all hands on deck fixing issues as they arise. The id team is hugely talented, I wouldn’t be the least surprised if the issue is now resolved.
how’s the game, if anyone actualy got in.
It’s actually pretty phenomenal that it runs so well and is free. Been playing for a couple months…it’s hard to go back to any multiplayer game on 360…the pace of the game is just unmatched.
Dandi PX4 is coming to slay you.
Hold on…enjoy another 24 hours of sweet life while I d/l the software.
queued to download the installer
queued to then download the game
queued to then play a 10 minute placement round
queued again atm to hopefully play online….
Queue is moving very fast! I am excited to play!
FungFlex on Quake Live
I thought I would get some work done tonight. Not any more.
counter-strike in the browser and im game
Why? You may aswel just play it outside of the browser, I don’t understand why that is something that would make you want to play a game…
Site just crashed and is not responding at all now…I guess this was bound to happen, but I didnt think would happen on the screen boasting about this amazing queue that prevents the site from crashing…
This game was boring when it came out years ago, but I can certainly see how playing it in my browser will spiffy it up and make it fun.
Pffft.
This is some awesome stuff!
It’s a blast from the past.
I get all the way down the countdown and it freakin brings me back to the website. I already registered and everything. Why does it keep doing this. Wont let me play or anything @^&#^%$%#^#$
This game finally let me dl the stuff and play. I must say this game is hella tight. 1 thing that sucked, I was playing the game fine and then I was experimenting with the buttons and I pushed the key 11 and my screen got smaller, no one was able to help me get the screen bigger. Yes I know all about resolutions and screen sizes that wasn’t the issue, my browser screen size was the same and I checked the box to play full screen at 1680×1050 and it was perfect till I hit the key 11 in game then poof!!!!!

I haven’t checked the open beta yet, but played a bit in closed beta.
And yes, you CAN run it on a Mac, but only through Parallels or any other way to run Windows.. ;)
Well that really doesn’t count now does it. ;)

jeez, and i thought i was going to actually get WORK done…
this is great
I don’t understand why pre-openbeta users have to wait in line.
Yeah, and I don’t understand why I have to wait in line at my local walmart….I mean i’ve been going going there long before everyone else….I was there on opening day!
