Plasma: She is dying

tombstonePlasma TVs are quickly becoming an extinct breed. There was once a time when plasma was the only large flat screen option available but not anymore. LCD has seemingly taken over most of plasma’s territory and currently there are only three plasma manufacturers still out there. It’s sad cause plasma TVs can and do produce a better picture than LCDs. (flame away in the comments, I ) The death of plasmas date back to when they first were produced. Why? Well, if you don’t mind the shameless plug, I go into in this Sound and Vision article that’s worth your time.

  • I love my plasma and it will be sad to see them replaced. The biggest misunderstanding is burn-in. Current plasmas don’t suffer from that. My girlfriend watches hours and hours of TLC with their bright red logo and we still have no burn-in after over a year.

  • Plasma’s are the same as Hummers nowadays. They might be cool and do something in a way better than the regular alternative, but you have to either help deforest some of the world’s rainforest supply or have a portable nuclear reactor in your basement.

Bot of that is also not-done…

Hurry with them *%)@*% oled screens!

  • a little better picture, and at the expense of what? power and weight.

no one is claiming LCDs are better in every sense, if you do some cost plus analysis, you will understand this better.

energy required to ship and to power those plasmas are simply huge.

AND modern LCDs have really good color production and their resolution are unsurpassed by the plasmas.

  • I’ll take my Plasma over my LCD any day. Realistic blacks, no screen door effect, no pixelation on very fast action scenes. Once again a case of the better technology losing.

  • While LCD’s are gaining ground they have not surpassed plasma in quality. I have a 7th gen plasma and a brand new LCD and the plasma blows the LCD away on color, contrast, and pixel movement.

Plasma does eat more juice though.
