As long as people understand the terms of Amazon's ebooks, I don't see the problem.

So I'm paying for a service rather than a product. Who cares? It's all academic. If the books on my Kindle are deleted or edited without my consent, then Amazon will simply find themselves at the receiving end of a complaint about their service, as happened when the George Orwell books were deleted.

And in my experience, every time I've had an issue with an ebook, they've simply refunded my money, no questions asked.

The "OMG it's like 1984" reactions (see your link) are sensationalist nonsense. If governments or multinationals want to control my thoughts they're going to have to try a bit harder than changing the endings of classic novels.

I'm looking forward to improvements in the Kindle device and other e-readers. I am a big fan of it though I believe there is room for new functionalities to come for our convenience. What do you guys think of the Nook, for instance, from Barnes & Noble? I like convenience and I go for products that give such edge.
The more I read about Kindle, the more I see rival e-readers coming out in time for Christmas. I saw a contest to win a Kindle on americanlisted. If interests:

First off, I love the bear comment and plan to use it as my own in the future. I have no shame. Thanks for a helpful list. I've been on the fence about getting a kindle, but I think I may accept one as a combination Christmas and birthday gift this year. Combo gifts are usually forbidden!

I just wanted to put in a thought about e-books in the classroom that many of you may have dismissed.
As a school system would/could you trust a kindle reader (and the cost of one) to the 13 year old neighbor boy who pees in the backyard when he thinks no one is looking? And trust me there are many families that certainly could not pay the replacement cost and it would be extremely unfair to them.

Nice review, it's a pity that the net connection doesn’t work internationally. But i heard they are working hard on it

By the way I have also found a nice review of the <a href="http://www.ebook-reader-advisor.com/kindle-reader.html" rel="nofollow">kindle reader</a>

I thought it was worth sharing

I really want to get this for my 15 year old. She is an avid reader. She will literally went through the entire Stephanie Meyer Twilight series in a week. But you say it's not for students. Well, I am a college student (yes, little late, but never too late in my opinion) and I am thinking I might like one too. All your do and don't reasons make sense; I just can't make up my mind! I need help making up my mind! Very sad....

I bought a leather cover for my kindle to give it durability. I don't think it's any more vulnerable than one of those expensive calculators that my kids had to buy.

I have back problems and almost always read in bed because I need to get "flat". I recently bought a kindle and I love it! First, I have had to get rid of over 10 file boxes of books last year because I moved into a small apartment. It broke my heart. However, after the purging I am finding that I enjoy fewer "things" in my life. The one problem with the kindle for me is going broke. I read constantly and buy constantly. Yikes!

When you buy a kindle book - it is not yours. The powers that be can delete or edit it at any time without your consent.

Thanks John,
Your 10 reasons to buy convinced me. Your 10 reasons not to buy reminded that it was actually a product manufactured on earth - not like anything from Apple (all Apple products are made by benevolent aliens and bestowed on mankind to aid in their evolution). "Explaining heaven to bears" slew me.Blogging at its best.
