I can’t remember the last time I’ve posted about Sony this many times so early in the week. The latest rumor comes from Dave Perry surrounding the PSP 2.
I hear Sony FINALLY has the PSP 2. And thank goodness, they’ve removed the stupid battery-sucking UMD disc drive. I’m excited!
Of course, this could just be a load of poppy cock, but we can never be too sure. If it’s true that Sony ditched UMD on the next gen PSP then the question is whether or not it will be backwards compatible. We probably won’t know until E3 in June.
Update: Here’s an update with Kotaku’s interview.
“I spoke to a developer who is working on it right now,” he said. “I know this developer is already working on it, so that means they have a prototype. That would sound like a fall release to me.”
As far as backwards compatibility goes, the old catalog would just be digitized, but nothing was mentioned about how you could transfer your old UMDs.
The rest is sort of whatever but feel free to check it out.

Guess I should unload this PSP 3000 while it’s still worth something.
I really think these rumors are killing Sony. So much speculation about price drops leads people to hold off on buying PS3s and the prospect of a new PSP means nobody is buying a PSP right now.
I love my PSP, but would be discouraged from picking up a PSP2 if it were not backwards compatible. I’ve built a decent collection of PSP games I’m not willing to just give up on. I say for the next version – put on the UMD drive. Correct me if I’m wrong, but it only drains battery when its in use, right? They can stop making games on the medium if they want, but leave it on there for backwards compatibility. AND BUILD IN A HARD DISK.
I agree with ‘thebonafortuna’ these rumors do nothing for Sony, all they do is make people like myself, who are thinking of buying a psp300, either hold off and happily get the new one or hold off and then be utterly devastated that no new machine is on the way.
Im totally sick and tired of hearing theres a PSP4000 coming out…then a PSP2.
I wish Sony, honest to god, would just say ‘yes..there will be a PSP2 coming in the autumn’ i mean, look at the DSi? that was announced 6months ago and everyones been gagging for it ever since. Announcing it doesnt stop people buying it, not if its definitely in the pipeline. People just hold off, save their money and go mad for it when the new one finalley emerges.
What Sony should be doing now, is telling everyone there is a model coming, be it the 4000 or a complete new overhaul in a PSP2. All this waiting is just forcing people to forget it and go out and buy a DSi instead.
Wake up Sony! I love your products, but your marketing is diabolical.
if thers no umd then how r we going to play?
