Dare we call the current crop of GPS units dumb. While they can tell you how to get between A or B, they don’t really know you. BMW’s upcoming Intelligent Learning Navigation System, or ILENA for short, will get to know you and your spouse intimately.

Exact details are in German, but so far we get that the system will learn your driving habits and routes to better assist in navigation and fuel economy. It seems like this is activated by the users Bluetooth or docked phone but there certainly must be an onscreen user select mode as well.

So, Molly Sue gets into her speedy, red 335i. The system will adjust the seat and mirrors for her small stature and cue up her daily routes and adjust the navigation accordingly. When Jack Huge gets into the car however, the seats automagicly adjust for him and the twin-turbo engine knows it’s in for a world of hurt, but the navigation is adjusted to save a bit of gas by selecting better routes.

We hear the system is about 80% accurate currently and only in development stages, but are you ready to have your car know everything about you and where you went. Me: Nope.

  • wow! that is really amazing, what type of technology the world is having now. Surely one day we will be driving our cars sitting at the back seat. what all we need to do is just set the destination point, it will automatically cue its routes using the GPS with additional technology we can drive our car without a driver.May be that will take some extra gas but who cares when technology matters..

  • Just so this is out there, the technology to have the seats, mirrors, driving wheel, and radio presets change to your preference when driving the car has been around a while now. My ‘02 GMC Envoy did that – it would adjust everything based on the key and wireless remote you used when entering the car. Awesome feature.

  • This feature is stupid and an insult to any driver. It implies that BMW drivers are so stupid that they don’t remember how to get home from the office from one day to the other. LOL! There already is an intelligent learing navigation system, it’s called a human brain.

And oh by the way…I enjoy driving, especially a 335 coupe! I dread the day when some machine would do this for me….Within 100 years we will have robots doing everything for us…cooking, cleaning, maids & butlers, walking the dog, change the cat litter…humans will turn in to blobs. Kids today rely on computers so much that god help us if the cash register breaks down they can’t add or subtract! Sometimes technology of technology’s sake is not necessarily a good thing.
