Dell’s got another Adamo teaser, this time a boring 30-second video of a model walking around the set of a photo shoot for 25 seconds with maybe five seconds of the actual notebook being shown.
Earth to Dell: We’re geeks. We don’t care about weird, skinny models half as much as we care about the specs and more photos of your weird, skinny laptop.
On behalf of everyone; lose the models, take 360-degree photos of the Adamo, and give us specs, pricing, and availability. If you’re keen on making videos with models, make one with an over-the-shoulder shot of a model trying to use the computer and call it “viral” in a mainstream press release.
Yes, Dell is positioning this computer at fashion-conscious consumers. But unless you’re Apple, even fashion-conscious consumers like to get a rough idea of what they’re buying. Dell’s blog post says: “Picture it — A sultry, laidback photo session. Nina Simone piped in to set the mood. A top model posing languidly with another ultra-thin ideal of beauty – Adamo by Dell.”
All I heard was “Blah, blah, blippidy, blah – Adamo by Dell.”

everything i’ve seen makes it look like a boring black block, it may be thin but it looks massive anyway, it looks like it was something Apple discarded when designing the MacBook
Wow. Dave. That was intelligent and well spoken. “Boring black block.” “Something Apple discarded when designing the MacBook.” Interesting. I own a MacBook Pro and a Dell Inspiron 1705. I love the MacBook for certain tasks and the Inspiron for others.
The more reliable and powerful tool? The Inspiron.
Get a clue: the Adamo is going to have specs similiar to other ultra thin laptops. Why the criticism about keeping the specs a secret is beyond me. Nothing new under the sun: Long Battery life, backlit keys, external SATA, blah blah blah.
I’m ordering one for my wife for her grad school graduation gift. Nothing like having a problem with your tool and having the technician show up at your house in a day or two to fix/consult with you.
Working in advertising (Austin) I can say that the campaign is just fine. Its a more avant-garde, and bold, direction for Dell so it pisses a lot of folks off. And some thought Apple to be the only U.S. company capable of making people feel as though they’re being treated in a condescending manner.
Aren’t ads supposed to insult/belittle/challenge your intelligence so you feel the need to purchase the product and equalize the discrepency between the power/knowledge you perceive yourself having and the power/knowledge you perceive company/product X capable of giving you?
What are you smoking Patrick, Dell are a great company and i have and XPS m1330 which i think is fantastic, but from what i’ve seen the Adamo won’t touch it
Thanks for taking note of the new Adamo trailer. You’re spot on in noting that our storytelling for this launch is a departure from the speeds-and-feeds, datasheet/product shot approach favored by “geeks” (your term), and that we’re speaking to audiences with different sensibilities.
Judging from the passion behind your comments, it’s working.
This is very much like how the Vaio P is being marketed in fashion magazines that only women read.
To Jay at Dell: They simply do not work. All they do is confuse people, and that makes people feel stupid, and people who are forced to feel stupid react with hostility. Dave, Doug… cases in point. You’re really fooling yourself if you think this approach will generate a majority positive response.
I see what you did there. Well crafted.
Jay at Dell, don’t worry, the ad will work. The Adamo has to, for better or worse, presented as a little better than you. Dell needs to get some of this market. And this is how the elite-product-consumers-companies play ball, daring you to belong to their club. Smacking you in the face, telling you you’re not special enough to know what this product’s pros/cons are, and then telling you to buy it (explicitly or subliminally)
Doug & MrSatyre: The Adamo brand campaign will resonate with some, not with others. And that’s OK.
That’s why I hate Mac’s not because their computers, but their users, I rather get a virus on an Adamo… uuuu I feel sexy already. !!
Trust the Adamo to take you there. I can’t wait till they come out with the tablet version of the adamo which can be used as a home monitoring system, and with a touch screen. Now we are talking. Go Dell!!, we are cheering you on.
The the sort of people this advert/branding would appeal to are going to buy Macs. The few that would consider getting anything other than a Mac will most likely be put off by the shear amount of sneering Mac fanboism they would have to put up with every time they started using their Adamo.
The rest of us want to know the specs so we can decide whether the form has constrained the functionality so much that it is not worth considering, like the Macbook Air.
