I love it. this guy gets it.

For God’s sake, how many times will some jumped-up tech geek predict the end of a mass media platform because there’s a technically superior niche model?
Nothing ever dies, it just fragments and finds a new position, and often a very impt position.
Don’t count radio out just because you have a logical sounding theory.

wow this is bitter. Terrestrial radio is gaining listenership as we speak. It's still making tons of $$, and is evolving thru the use on internet, twitter, facebook, blogging, video ... the list goes on. You lose.

Regular radio is sooo dead, not just the lame same music but the loss of quality talk shows, Don & MIke, Corolla, Frosty Heidi and Frank, Leykis etc. alomg with Howards departure leave only one use for my car radio, to play podcasts through.
I have to say radio's loss is pod casting's gain, I find many more intersting voices in this world than before.

While your points are really thought out and mostly correct, some music is still introduced to people on the radio. Especially people like me who do not go out of their way at ALL to listen to new music. That MGMT song "Kids" I heard first on the radio.

As a sole writer/publisher of a pop song of the year "ASCAP"- i appreciate that fear that we all share- but as we know from all our Marianne Williamson readings- and just about every great motivational speaker- you will never succeed when you operate from a place of fear as the record companies did with MP3's, Drummers with drum machines, Photographers with Photoshop ect.....

This system that pays us was contemplated 50 years ago and not based on core beliefs as our constitution is but rather a pragmatism that sought to institutionalize the way royalties paid-- keep in mind this was a time when Barry Gordy was putting his name down as a writer on Holland Dozier Holland and Stevie songs- It was never contemplated to reflect an equitable distribution of money-

Now through the extrapolation of changes in the way we consume media- this system is uncovered for the inequities it perpetuates...... Think about this judy...... if Madonna was properly compensated for her vocals on all those early hits..... as a singer receiving an equitable distribution of money each time one of her songs was played........ do you think she would have insisted in writing all her songs or owning publishing when she was powerful enough to do so????

While perhaps she may have, it would have been out of greed as opposed the necessity that saw Mary Wilson of the Supremes die penniless even though she had been a singer on some of the most played records in history.

The honest reality that songwriters rarely consider, is that the reason every new artist insists on writing music, even when they don't and in many cases cannot, is that it has been one of the few consistent revenue streams. An argument can be made that the greed of songwriters and publishers has been an absolute cornerstone to the gutting of the craft of songwriting to the point where every 16 year old wanna be- thinks they have the acuity and depth of character to write a meaningful song or need to write their songs to be viable (Frank Sinatra anyone)...... but i digress....

KEXP is an excellent choice. The University of Seattle and The Experience Music Project kind of have a joint venture gooing on with this station. In any case they are really well programmed, truly diverse AND ait's one of the stations available on the iPhone of Blackberry or Android phones via Flycast.

So you can enjoy them everywhere you have a cell signal.

I have to say, I think this is an accurate assessment of radio from what I'm observing. I, myself almost never listen to music radio for enjoyment - and I'm in the music biz!

However, I am wondering what will happen to my BMI songwriter income as radio keeps tanking. Scary for some of us who are not touring.

Internet radio is great, but it is always good to have a terrestrial radio station to fall back on in the car sometimes.

I HATE HATE HATE Top 40 radio, and the slow march towards "Top 40 or nothing" is what will eventually drive me away from radio entirely.

Until then, I will be clinging to 101.9RXP, which in the NYC area is the only rock station left. They are great, but now I fear for their future as well. :(
