With no cars being sold, Sirius XM turns to iPhone to promote itself

Now that nobody on planet Earth is buying cars anymore, Sirius XM has to find a new way to promote itself to would-be buyers. It used to be that buyers of new cars would get a couple free months of Sirius or XM included; but what now? If yesterday’s conference call is any indication, Sirius XM, which was rescued at the ELEVENTH HOUR by Liberty Media last month, will really begin to promote itself to fancy-pants iPhone and iPod touch users. A Sirius XM-developed (remember, that third-party Star Player was killed last week) application will help spread the gospel of Howard Stern, Opie and Anthony, Oprah and TonsOfSports.

In and of itself, this isn’t new. We’ve known for some time now that Sirius XM had an iPhone application in development, but its importance to the company has never been more clear. With regular, commercial radio floundering, if not already dead (my opinion!), it’s high time Sirius XM start telling all those iPhone-loving folks out there—plenty of y’all, I’m sure—that, “you know what, satellite radio is actually pretty cool, if you don’t mind spending $15 a month. You get lots of commercial-free music, exclusive talk radio (Stern and O&A, etc.) and some fun sports! And being able to listen to that right on your iPhone would be pretty neat, too, don’t you think?”

Obviously their marketing would be a bit punchier, but you get the idea. Sirius XM needs to actively promote itself to the TWITTER GENERATION, as it were.

  • I don’t understand what this article is saying. Did Sirius XM release an app or not? I can’t find one in the app store, and if they didn’t your title should say Sirius XM must turn to iPhone .

    • He said that according to a conference call yesterday, Sirius/XM is going to really ramp up efforts to market itself on iThings.

He linked to the article above too, but here it is again:

I see the value there, unless SiriusXM really starts charging to stream online to people already paying for an account. Then it seems stupid, to me at least. Either way, smart to move in this direction.

And for the record Nicholas, I don’t think their marketing pitch has to be/should be any snappier than what you said above. You’re right about the “Twitter generation” (God help us, I don’t know how people use that service)…keep it simple and convey the point in short, concise sentences. Or lose people’s attention.

  • Sirius XM already announced price increases starting 3/11, including $3 per month for online access for existing customers (no more free streaming).

Slacker Radio (slacker.com) blows Sirius XM away in regards to Music and Comedy (no talk or sports). Slacker is free, portable and cuctomizable. Slacker carries their own portable device (G1 & G2) and already has applications for iPhone, iTouch and BlackBerry at no cost.

Needless to say, Sirius XM’s efforts will not retain me as a subscriber. Rising prices, poor content (since the merger)…etc.

  • Why should I subscribe to censored Sirius XM? Mel is gagging Opie and Anthony in deference to Howard in 2009. Why should I pay for that shit. Mel, pull your nose out of Howard’s ass. You really need O&A.

  • This is just getting stupid. We now have to pay to listen online too. I am getting close to pulling the trigger on cancelling my subscription.

    • You and me both. They have turned Lithium into a carbon copy of “Lucy” from XM, which is basically another “90’s on 9″/The Pulse (channel 12). Pretty much the exact same music.

I could almost stand hearing The Goo Goo Dolls on my “grunge” station, but I heard Eagle Eye Cherry a few weeks back and that was it. If anyone at Sirius is reading this, you should know I’m a three plus year subscriber who will not be renewing when the time comes. I can honestly get better variety on the terrestrial stations around Boston than I can Nirvana – Alannis Morissette – Goo Goo Dolls – Nirvana – AiC – Soundgarden – Eagle Eye Cherry in rotation.

  • I think that complaining is very easy to do. Sure all things are impefect but you try to find the good in everything we do. la la la la laaaaa. I subscribed to the online service about a week ago which was down for a few days but i think it would be awesome to be able to listen on my iphone.

  • will sirius xm com to zune or zune hd. everybody doesnt have a iphone
