applepieceAfter refreshing developer.apple.com 347923691423964 times I could finally manage to download the beta version of the iPhone OS 3.0. It is available only for those in possession of a developer account and a registered iPhone in the developer program. So no, you should not download this from torrent, it will have your iPhone wiped and locked, inactivated unless you have a dev account. Getting the iPhone OS 3.0 beta was only a slightly better experience than the Windows 7 beta’s first day of existence.

The first thing that caught my eye is that they changed a couple of icons. Otherwise the home screen is the same as it was before. Accessing the search screen feels just right. You swipe the screen to the right and it’s there. You can search contacts, music and mail. Photos and text messages don’t seem to show up for me.

The email screen looks like the same as it was before but if you swipe down you’ll notice the new search bar. If your search has no results in your inbox you can expand your query to your original Gmail account.img_0126Browsing seems a bit faster too; it took about 10 seconds to load crunchgear.com. Maybe they put some of Safari 4’s performance tweaks into the iPhone browser.

The iPhone gets copy/paste! Everyone go crazy!

So this is where I double tap. Now I can choose to select a region specified by me or to select the whole text. The following is pretty self-explanatory.

iphone_cut_and_paste

The undo function works like a charm. Shake to undo and shake again to redo. This is not instant, though, so you don’t have to be afraid that you’ll accidentally undo or redo something if you put the phone down or something.

undo

The Voice Memos app has a sweet built-in decibel meter. After you record your stuff you can share it. I’m not sure if I’ll ever use this application but it’s fun.

The memo app and its menu

I tried to send an MMS to myself but it seems that I have to set it up with my carrier first (why would an iPhone plan support MMS right now after all). Bluetooth will also remain a mystery for now.

We’ll keep you informed of any new stuff we find, easter eggs, bugs, or what have you, so check back.

Update:

- If you press the home button at the home screen search comes up. Press again to go back to the home screen
- The free memory app seems to be able to free up to 35MB of RAM. This value was 20-23MB previously
- Copy/Paste in email works a little different: Touch until magnifier comes up and then release for the copy menu
- Copied text is available after switching the phone off and on again
- You can copy entire text messages by double tapping the message bubble at the SMS thread. It’s a little funny though because the bubbles turn blue but only the most recently selected bubble gets copied
- The little camera icon for MMS is just not there for me
- Can not connect to Youtube
- Push email works pretty well. I get emails instantly from Gmail when the phone is in standby

  • I cannot formulate words for how jealous I am. I really don’t want to have to wait until summer for this. And its only going to be released in the summer if it isn’t delayed. Like push has been for quite a few months now

  • Nice screen shots..

Sure hope you get to keep your Dev license

    :-

  • so your phone remained unlocked? or u had to unlock it again?

  • Can anybody say a few words about how the notes sync works? Does it sync to Apple Mail?

  • From the iPhone OS 3.0 Pre-install notice:

Pre–release software is Apple confidential information. Your unauthorized distribution
of pre–release software or disclosure of information relating to pre–release software
(including the posting of screen shots) may subject you to both civil and criminal
liability and result in immediate termination of your iPhone Developer Program
    Membership.

    Dork.

  • does it allow you to revert back to 2.1.1 incase you get sick of the 3.0 beta? is your phone jailbroken? is it safe to upgrade to the beta with a jailbroken phone?

    thanks!

    • You can download the 2.1.1 and restore the iPhone with it.

      • Are you sure?

        From the Apple Dev site:

        “By installing iPhone OS 3.0
beta software on your Authorized Test Devices, these Devices are permanently
“locked” into testing mode and cannot be restored to earlier versions of iPhone
        OS.”

        • If I option+click on restore in iTunes, I’m able to load a file to update my phone with. I’m only guessing here but I think that you can load an earlier OS and restore on that. It’s only a guess.

      • are you sure about this? apple says its not possible to go back.. and i have yet to find anyone who’s done it…

        • You definately can’t downgrade. It upgrades your baseband to revision 4.X.X instead of 2.2.1’s baseband of 2.X.X…. If you try and downgrade it errors and doesn’t apply the update. The log states that the current baseband is newer than the version which 2.2.1 comes with.

        • If you’re doing it on a 2G iPhone, it is possible to go back to 2.2.1, but if you’re doing it on a 3G iPhone, it’s not possible because the 3.0 OS updates the baseband, which is why you can downgrade.

  • Can you customise Mail’s email alert?

    • Ive done it !!!! i was on iphone os 3.0 beta and i went back to version 2.2.1!!!!!!

      • I seriously doubt your downgrade. I’ve tried several times, it simply will not downgrade once your in 3.0
A nice thing to share is how to put pictures and previous apps onto your iPhone. Music is dragged onto the device but no old apps or picture or ringtones. I really don’t mind but I change my stuff often and downloading apps again and again is a pain as far as not being able to put photos on my phone it’s easy to email but also a pain 3.0 is lagging a bit but is much nicer that copy and paste are finally here… R.I.P.
        to 2.2.x

  • There is a feature on the new iPhone 3.0 OS called “Find My iPhone” It shows up under the mail settings of a Mobile Me account when you set one up. It does not look like it is fully operational yet. Maybe another good reason to get a Mobile Me account. The ability to track down your iPhone and I hope to nuke it remotely so it can’t be used if stolen or lost.

  • Maybe the ‘Find My iPhone’ feature sends via PUSH a notification that in turn instructs the phone to report its position via GPS?

  • Could you have check if there is proper Arabic support now?
    Thanks,
    Moritz

  • Don’t be a dick. Pony up the $100 and sign up for your own Dev account.

  • Hey Ivan…

Sorry for the newbie / naive question, but how do you actually get the beta installed? I was able to download, but when I double-click the file it just brings up iTunes and in there I can’t find any reference to the new beta.

I just saw in one of your replies about an option+click on the Restore button…is that how I load the beta?

  • Option + click for rolling back to 2.2 firmware does not work, tried the whole day , with a brick :) in my hand.

    • As per my reply above..

You definately can’t downgrade. It upgrades your baseband to revision 4.X.X instead of 2.2.1’s baseband of 2.X.X…. If you try and downgrade it errors and doesn’t apply the update. The log states that the current baseband is newer than the version which 2.2.1 comes with.

Your only option (as was mine) is to either register as an Apple developer (can take some months for approval) or get your phone added to another dev’s account.

A developer can have up to 100 phones registered under their account. They then import the license and you can activate your phone on their computer. Once it’s done you can then use it as normal on your itunes.

The very last resort option is to wait for 3.0 stable to come out which will have the same or newer baseband version which will then be updateable.

      • Registering as an Apple developper took months in April of 2008 when they had just released the SDK and thousands of people wanted to sign up at the same time.
Now it takes about 24 hours (it took far less for me).

  • Any idea why YouTube doesn’t work?
Also would be very interested to know if you’re actually able to reload 2.1. Have you tried this? Thanks.

  • Hello,
I’ve downloaded the Iphone SDK but i have no idea how i can install it on my Iphone!
Anyone can help me with it?
Is the SDK the latest updateyou guys are talking about?

    thanks.

  • For those trying to install the iPhone Beta OS software (and this is because Apple drops the ball on providing any clear instructions – READ Notes below before trying these steps)

    1) Download both the SDK and Beta OS
    2) Run the SDK (XCODE App) with your iPhone attached
    3) Copy the long UDID string of characters
    4) Log in to your iPhone developer account
    5) Register your iPhone as a developer device using the UDID string (paste it here)
    6) Close iTunes
    7) Go back into XCODE and Restore the OS (basically point it to the downloaded iPhone OS 3.0 beta file)
    8) Once complete, unplug the iPhone, open iTunes and replug the USB
    9) Either setup as a new device or restore using your old image. NOTE: Restoring will bring over your network settings, some saved App files, etc. but will not sync your Apps/Photos/Music automatically.
    10) Sync
    11) Oh Happy Day! You are now done and up and running!

    NOTES:

    a) You MUST be a registered iPhone developer or you will brick your phone. $99 at developer.apple.com
    b) You SHOULD register your device as a developer device BEFORE you upgrade the beta OS
    c) You CANNOT revert back to a previous iPhone OS so once you go down this road, you either will get iPhone OS 3.0 beta working on your iPhone or you will render your iPhone useless. Make sure you have a developer account and register your iPhone BEFORE doing the above steps! To register look at steps 4/5 above.

    • Danno,

Those instructions are there on the dev site, and they’re pretty clear. There are step by step instructions and videos. There is a big warning before you download saying you MUST REGISTER THE PHONE BEFORE you update.

The dev beta isn’t for a bunch of people who just want to run 3.0 on their iPhones. Basic familiarity with the developer program is assumed.

All that said, I hope your instructions here save a few bricked iPhones, which Apple will not repair or replace.

    • how to upgrade iphone from 2.21 to 3.0 in windows?

  • Your pictures are all with T Mobile, can Apple come after you for using a Jailbroken iphone?

  • If I instal 3.0 Beta, will I still be able to upgrade to the final version in the summer without having any problems? or is it once its “locked” into developer/testing mode, it will always be in testing mode?

  • I’m wondering exactly the same thing as Paul. Don’t really want my iPhone to be “locked” as a development device for all time, whatever that means.

  • Don’t worry about that. You will be able to update the official 3.0 when it come and will be free. n fact you may go to your account and cancel the device to be in the developer program.

A question from beta 3 owners. What about other apps. Do they work normally? Any crash or not working? Amazon Kindle? Remote? Photographic or graphic apps? games?

    • To add to my earlier post and reply to yours… Tiki Towers loads and starts fine, but has no screen-tap controls… and I was half-way through! But I can live with that for now. Google Maps seems to be a dead screen too. The interface loads, but is again unresponsive. Labyrinth seems buggy too. Fast Tap Camera just spins and spins but never loads. Shazam also fails to ‘listen’ it would seem. BBC and CNAsia News readers seem OK, as does iStat…Spotlight is great. Videos seem to play fine, and syncing seems to be spot-on too… If I find anything else, I’ll post it. I knw I will miss Maps fr a while though… and those darn monkeys!

      Cheers,
      K.

      • Just found another bug… No SMS alert tone. I can go into the setting menu and select one, but it doesn’t make any sound… grr. Hopfully something that can be fixed again… :o(

  • @Feri

I loaded it on my iPod Touch (still having cold feet about the iPhone) and all apps I’ve tried work fine, including Remote, YouTube, Wunder Radio, and Tweetie. I’ll let you know if I run across any that don’t work.

Also, free Emoji enabling doesn’t work anymore. :(

  • I was not apple to get push for gmail. How did you do it? I already enabled push notification. Are you sure it’s gmail?

  • Does the 3.0 update include support for Windows Live mail? Contacts, Calendar and Mail syncronisation?

It currently supports Windows Mail, but not Live Mail. Surely it can’t be that hard?

Also how about Firefox bookmark syncronisation? Any word about that?

  • Ok, so it seems that everyone is saying register “BEFORE” installing. I was too excited and rushed to install the 3.0, a huge mistake!
So would I be able to sign up after and register my device?
Right now it is “bricked” and says “cannot activate because phone is not registered as a developer device.”

    • not bricked — just register, follow instructions to activate in X-code, etc and can recover. Will cost u the $99 bucks :)
      have a nice 1

    • Kayleb- Find your UDID by plugging in iPhone to mac, open System profiler on the mac (use searchlight if you have to), click USB and your UDID for the iphone will be the longest one (40 characters). Then go to iphone developer site and register your iphone’s UDID in the portal under add device. let me know if you have a problem.

  • Hi there. Newbie trying out his Mac abilities to make a change from video editing. Installed 3.0 after signing up for SDK. Enjoying it, but no Maps and some games no longer work. Screen seems unresponsive to them. Hope to develop my own apps soon though. C-n-P works very well, and landscape is great. Just my 2c worth. Any more thoughts out there, esp regarding maps, and how they could be made to work again? Thanks. K.

  • i still have few more slots available for the iphone 3.0 contact me asap sold quite a few already

  • I would be more than happy to add anyones UUID to the dev list. Paypal $9 to robsky@me.com with your UUID

You can check your UUID in iTunes, select your iphone and click on the serial number and it will change to the UUID

On mac you can go to applications>utilities>system profile and on the left menu select USB and select iphone from the right box, next to serial number it should show the UUID

  • I’d like to thank Rob for his help and his patience.

One note about a different way to getting your UDID to register your iPhone:

Use System Profiler > Hardware > USB > iPhone > Serial Number.

  • I’d love if someone would give me a slot for free. if you would be nice enough to than please email me at gandolf535@yahoo.com so that i can give you my UDID

  • I will sell people a slot on my Dev account for $8 email me for details, it seems a lot of people are looking to upgrade and try it out.
