Is it time for a PS3 pricedrop? Most Internet pundits feel that it’s getting a little stale at the current price and Sony needs to drop the price. A major UK retailer told CVG this morning that the PS3 and PSP price cuts are “definitely coming soon.” We don’t know how much the cuts will be, nor when they will happen, but it’s about damn time.
There was once a time when the PS3 sold at the high price well partly because of the included Blu-ray player. Those were the days when Blu-ray players were still hovering around the price of the PS3, so many people opted for both a next-gen optical player and a gaming system. Those days are gone and the XBOX can now be had south of $199. It’s time Sony; cut the price.

Finally, the drop…

I “might” get one then, if they can give me one at around $300-$350.
You are fucking retarded. try 199 you fucking douche!
Well thought response bob.
I remember the craze and that even one of my friends bought this console for the sole purpose of Blu-ray playing.
I wouldn’t mind getting me one of these for free online playing…which is a nice feature.
You guys (and other sites) have been reporting this “price drop” based on unsubstantiated rumors for about a year now – and it hasn’t happened. An argument could be made that by constantly reporting a price drop, people are being influenced into not buying a PS3 until the price drops. Which keeps not happening. And people keep not buying one because that infamous price drop is right around the corner.
I’m not singling you out Matt, everyone is doing this. But don’t you (all) think its time to stand up and wait for a reputable source to make an announcement on a price drop before continuing to report on one?
yanno, if Sony ever wants to “catch-up” with its rivals THEY NEED A PRICE DROP NOW! The price for blu-ray players are falling. Why on earth would someone play extra for a gaming system the smallest gaming library (not including backwards compatible games) It’s no wonder Sony is running last in the gaming console wars..
Me: I’m not buyin’ one until its priced competitively compared to other consoles. I hope others share the same sentiments until Sony gets the message.

$199 would get me thinking about one. Anything higher would have me shrugging in indifference.
Screen Slueth you are just poor and cheap. $199. Are you kidding me. Have any of you ever even seen or played with this thing. It’s incredible. I am too waiting until april to get one because of the rumored price drop but only out of principal not becuase im cheap. Lets see Its a Web brouser, an in home entertainment system with the PS store, A photo album, It holds music, It comes with a lifetime of free gaming online, it has a bluray player that has the ability to update itself, not too mention the fact that It’s the only game system available that plays in 1080p. Add up how much a computer, a digital picture frame, an ipod, a bluray player, and a gaming system. Nuff Said.
i got mine from Dell w/ coupon – i dont see it going much cheaper than that.
it should be about $119.99
I think the 360 fanboys have landed. $119.99?! really. Is that the cost for a non warranty 360 repair these days?
“about time” just wouldn’t be an accurate enough statement
Found This on another site dated 3/17/09 …..
Sony senior vice president of marketing Peter Dille says “there are still no immediate plans to cut the prices of the PS3 consoles.”
Just FYI
Of course you found that on another website. Sony will furiously defend their position of “no immediate plans to cut the prices” lest they stall ALL sales (no matter how small) until the price cut. You don’t announce you’re going to cut a price and then expect to sell a single unit until after your price cut takes effect.
Amen.
I have 4 PS3 games with no PS3. Wonder why? Yeah I’ve been stocking up for this price drop and honestly I’m not budging until it happens. Not because I’m cheap but no one who even remotely follows the industry is going to go buy one now with the scent of price drop in the air. This will do Sony good. Wii is my homeboy but playing my cousin’s PS3 for the past few months has given me the 1080p itch. I AM DYING TO PLAY MY RESIDENT EVIL 5.
I have a Wii and I am in no hurry to buy a PS3. I will gladly wait until Sony drop price of PS3. Can wait till 2010 if I have to. But if Microsoft drops price for XBOX 360, it might influence Sony’s decision.
Here is my take on the whole price issue. With all the BS rumors that have circulated for the past year or so that all have thus far proven to be false, dont get caught up in this. A price drop will come when scea feels that it is in their best financial intrests. Remember that while these companies may or may not actually care about their customers it is still buisness one that needs to be successful in order for them to support it. If they drop price tommorrow they may stand to lose enough money over the next year or two that they may beforced to bankrupt. This could intern cause no support for the system, no updates, no new games and so on basically kill the system leaving us with the ok but “imo” not graphically up to par Wii or the ever crashing horribly unstable and out right cheaply made Xbox 360. not trying to put down either console or its owners. Im not a fanboy of any console, I respect each one for its unique benifits that it offers to the gaming community and every gamer has their own wants that determins what console is right for them. That being said those who are confused about which console to buy I would be more than happy to share a concept that may help influence your decsion. A regular gamer who will only puchase 1 of 3 current consoles has to take certain conditions into account in my first analysis will be PS3 vs Xbox 360 PS3 at a price of $399.99 is 100% all systems go needing no addional purchase exept games and addons from game manufacturers “i.e. map packs etc.” Xbox 360 at price off $299.99 for a standard hdd system requires a monthly or yearly fee to play online at a price off $49.99 per yr so by doing some math assuming you intend fully utilize your system for several years Xbox 360 will cost you more at the start of the third year than a PS3 will in my expeirences Xbox live vs PS3 online is very similar as far as quality playing online only big difference is cost so short term value Xbox 360 is the winner as a long term investment PS3 takes the cake so to speak. Now the Wii for $249.99 on the other hand is a great console but “again IMO” is better a party platform for social events and get togethers. Not much to offer in the way of high quality gaming. Please buy with caution :-).
For the record I would like to state that these are my own opinons and are not meant to upset anyone thanks for listening.
good day all
Even at $399 Sony is losing cash. The guts of the PS3 are expensive… 300 million transistors, a system operating at 2 trillion calculations per second, etc. The investment is in the future sales of games, and yes, the software designers have a while to go before they can learn to utilize the potential of the hardware installed in the PS3. The pricing will not go down until the PS4 arrives, in my opinion anyways. It would cost thousands to create a PC gaming computer that would only partially touch what goes into a PS3. Although designed to play games, the PS3 is not a toy, rather it is work of technology so advanced that to begin to comprehend its inner complexities would stagger the imagination of any layman in the field of computer science. Enough said.
