With this latest advance in biomimetic weaponry, BigDog will truly be striking fear into the hearts of America’s enemies. When they see his burnished horns bobbing at them out of a background of terror and carnage, they’ll drop their weapons and cower. I think they’ve got a little to work on with the speed of the charge, but that’s just a technical quibble.

No kidding… but I guess batteries are too heavy right now. Gas is the only thing that can provide that power-to-weight ratio, apparently.
They went with the gas-powered engine because it worked. Their primary concern was getting the control software to work properly. The power system is designed as a “pack”, and once they perfect the system itself, they can work on upgrading the power pack with something more high-tech. Trying to develop all of that at the same time just complicates things, and the power system isn’t the focus of the program.
And they’ve been putting that set of horns on those things for years, since the first time they took it to Texas for a demonstration. Those guys have a really fun sense of humor.
