I was just writing up the leak of this sucker when it drops in my lap. The new Canon T1i is the latest in their Rebel series of entry-level DSLRs, and this new version makes me sad I went for the XSi instead of waiting. Blogger’s remorse. At any rate, it looks excellent. So what’s new?
The major changes are these:
- 15.1 megapixels, up from 12 in my XSi
- 1080p and 720p movie recording and HDMI out
- 3″ LCD, same as 5D
- 3.4fps burst shooting (170 JPEGs max)
- DIGIC IV image processor, makes for better noise reduction

The lucky ducks over at Demystifying Digital got to spend an hour with the T1i, and report that everything is as it should be. They’ve even got video. Except for the 1080p video mode, which only shoots at an unusable 20fps. 20? 720p does 30, though, so no worries there. There’s also no jog dial as was speculated, but that’s all right with me; I like my D-pad.
Here’s some video, thanks to Demystifying Digital:
Lots more details are also at DPReview, as expected. The whole thing will cost you $899 for the kit or $799 for body only. As always, I recommend the latter.

wow, i seriously need to consider switching back from nikon to canon, the price for this Canon DSLR is just to tempting ….
It really pisses me off that they now have a rebel camera that is distingushed from the 50D only in frame rate, size and build quality.
The inclusion of 1080p, while understandable, makes the choice for most people between the T1i and the 5D Mk.II now and thus renders my 50D a little like a crippled little brother of the 5D Mk. II
nobody is going to shoot 1080p at 20fps though.
I thought the same thing too. Especially since I just GOT the 50D the day before news of this camera broke…
However, now that I’ve had it for a while, I’m happy with my purchase. It’s a nice well build camera. I like the jog dial as well as the LCD screen on top. It’s a great upgrade from my previous XTi. And I like the “chunky” feel of the 50D. Feels better in my hand. Heavier but it’s a good weight.
And sure, it’s the “prosumer” version of the 5D but the price difference is huge! The new T1i is the same price as the 40D but the 5D is another $1k+. For hobby photographers like me, I still think the 50D is still a really good choice.
Here‘s some more cameras to drool about :)

Good Camera
I understand that Canon has to stay competetive for an entry level DSLR but based on many of the the features being the same as the 50D, plus having the video option and priced at several hundred dollares less – it has watered down the desire & need for the 50D which I believe is a great camera.
i like new canon rebel t1i

The best dslr for 2009
All of the first impressions show the Canon T1i as the best entry level DSLR.
With all of the First Impressions, it’s sounding like the Canon T1i is the best entry level camera on the market today.
good dslr, canon t1i vs nikon d5000
What lens would you go for if you were to buy the Canon T1i body only?
get a wide angle zoom that costs around $200. This is a popular one.
I am thinking of upgrading my CanonXTi to Canon T1i. My concern is are the Lenses I had collected for XTi will suit the T1i? Can anyone help me?
wait for the Nikon 4t5
