Initially unveiled way back in September of last year, the “Gametrak Freedom” motion sensing remote control for Xbox 360 and the PS3 has undergone a bit of a makeover and is currently on display at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco.

IGN reports that the controller will be available this fall for the Xbox 360, “with a PS3 variation potentially following next year.” The Freedom bears a striking resemblance to the Nintendo Wii remote and will ship with a USB-port base station connected to two wands that sit on either side of your TV. Unlike the Wii remote, the Freedom won’t require line-of-sight but will instead use “ultrasonic 3D positioning” to relay the remote’s position via a series of pulses.

Third-party game support is expected for the Freedom though the remote will ship with a game developed in-house called Squeeballs, which is basically a series of mini games featuring characters reminiscent of Madballs from the mid eighties.

No word on exact pricing or availability dates yet.

  • Haha, nice try.

  • Third-party copycat accessory coming out four years after a console’s launch with no actual game developers supporting it at it’s lanuch? Yeah, this will go over like gangbusters!

  • So once again Xbox wants to take something of Nintendo’s and use it for their own? First they take The “Mii” and turn it into some avatar thing that can only be used in about two games, and then they are trying to take the whole concept of the Wii? What is their problem?

  • great

i dont need to buy wii

  • That’s some serious sour grapes from Nintendo fanboys! I own both so am neutral, and hardly ever play the Wii as it is. With this news I’ll probably never play it again except for special games like Mario Galaxy 2 and that’s about it.
