Mafia types and limousine drivers take note: according to the latest California Air Resources Board report, dark and black cars could soon be verboten. Why? Because darker colors require heavier air conditioner usage, naturally.
A Mythbusters-type test is in order here but I suspect that the actual difference, internally and while in motion, between a white car and a black car is negligible and as anyone who has gotten into a hot car – any color hot car – that AC is going on ASAP anyway.
The recommendation appears in CARB Cool Cars Standards and Test Procedures which will require 20% solar reflectivity in all colors by 2016, thereby forcing pigment-makers to rethink those glossy colors. This change should also change the actual quality of the color, rendering black a dull brown. Maybe they need Tru-coat? Or maybe some nano-paint with the same coloration but lower reflectivity?

I have a black on black car and like anyone with a black car I have figured out that rolling down the windows in the beginning (first mile or so) is way way way more effective in cooling the car down than cranking the AC!! Then you turn the AC after the scorching hotness is gone.
Let me be the first in calling early April Fools on this one.

I agree with Alex – out of all of the disaster and financial turmoil brought on by an inexperienced Ahnold as Governator – it is amazing that our biggest concern is about the color of an automobile. All of my vehicles are black and unless the state plans on providing a tax credit to either paint or purchase new non-black vehicles – it’s going to stay that way. I want to scientific evidence that driving a black car is harmful to the environment over another color. Morons!!
And so to follow this to its logical, nut cake conclusion – can I assume that Obama, Sharpton and Jackson and anyone else of equal pigmentation will be tagged with a black enviro fee every time they visit the state — (or) simply banned from entering this lunatic asylum?

It’s great that banning black cars will help the environment, and then you show the “Land Yacht”. Ban that. Seriously. it has more wheels on it than most freight trucks, and the engine is likely just as “fuel efficient”. I have a Dark Navy car, looks dark purple in bright sunlight. Just a few shades off black. You ban my car and you can bet I’ll fight it, unless you buy me the Telsa Model S, or even a Fusion, I hear that gets decent MPG for a gas car.

No the Prius isn’t bad because its black, its bad because its a hybrid. The 20% increase in fuel economy doesnt offset the fact that the materials used in production are among the most hazardous chemicals on the planet. Pair that with the fact that they have no means of disposal and you have an evil “green car” Diesel is the only true “green” way to go.
This can’t be for real, they can’t tell you what color of car to buy, that’s a fucking dictatorship, and if they do this I will move my fucking ass to California with every car I own, which happens to all be black except for my Denali.

Also if this is true, they should ban people of darker skin from California, because it takes to long to cool down buildings when they’re inside. Effing re-donk-ulous.
The State has mandated that gas stations install new nozzles that reduce the amount of vapor escaping 3% (From 95% capture to 98%). The cost to business is some where in the neighborhood of $420,000,000. The last 2% of vapor capture will probably bankrupt us, but hey…its for the environment. Green the new Red.

How about to make taxes for black people; they are black, so as we know black color will magnet the heat, so they are sweating more when white and using more AC, that means more energy. Its ridiculous I know, but that’s what it is.
