Hooray for anything: Video game themes hit iGoogle

Are you one of the eight people who actually uses iGoogle? Good news for you, then, as Google is working with video game publishers, like Nintendo, Capcom and Activison Blizzard, to produce custom themes for the site. (Two minutes pass.) I just turned on this Street Fighter IV theme, and the chances of me using iGoogle just went up by 100 percent. So, job done, Google.

My one complaint: they have FIFA 09 but not Pro Evolution Soccer 2009? Are they having a laugh? Anyone who knows anything about football (soccer) knows that PES is the superior game, despite the lack of certain official kits.

I don’t know, we’re all gamers here, thought you might get a kick out of seeing Donkey Kong, Final Fantasy and whatnot atop your homepage.

  • Is there an alternative to iGoogle that I should be using to drop that number down to 7?

    • It’s just that I’ve never met anyone who uses iGoogle regularly, hence the “only eight people use it” gag. Drudge Report has been my homepage since 2002, so what do I know?

      • Drudge Report looks like it was designed for dial up. Pretty stark. I use iGoogle 90% for Google Reader, since I get to my sites via RSS almost exclusively. The other 10% is because it has google serach right there and all I have to do to get to it is hit the home button. I just find it really convenient vs using things like bookmarks that I never organize.

  • I use iGoogle as my homepage at work. They use Websense at work so almost EVERYTHING is blocked.

iGoogle is the only way that i’ve found to listen to the radio while i’m here. I went ahead and added about 50 radio gadgets to my iGoogle page, went through and removed all of them that didn’t work, and ended up with 1 German Rock radio that does work….they play some good stuff I guess.

  • No Katamari Damacy theme. Boo.

  • I am sorry but in the old days yes PES was better than FIFA but all that has changed. You should try FIFA now. I think you’ll be surprised.

  • My question is what kind of license fee did Google pay to be able to feature these themes ?
