Late last night, Sony and Microsoft pushed out releases for their respective game consoles. Firmware v2.70 for the PlayStation 3 adds text chat support for up to 16 players while in and out of gameplay and you can be in up to three chat rooms at once! A few other additions are included.

Friends list on the XMB (XrossMediaBar)

* Sort your friends via their online status
* Attach larger files to the messages you send to your friends (file size will increase from 1MB to 3MB)

Video delivery service on PlayStation Store

* Video files you’ve purchased from the PlayStation Store can be backed up to an external storage device and then restored to PS3’s internal hard drive for playback – so you can clear up space on your hard drive and then restore the video anytime in the future
* Videos you’ve purchased for PSP (PlayStation Portable) system can now be transferred to PS3 for playback

Microsoft also pushed out a firmware update for the Xbox 360, but Major Nelson says there are no new features. However, the update should fix “interruption issues” experienced by some XBL users during a handful of games. That’s seriously it.

  • Overall, pretty lame updates on both ends from my point of view.

  • Its baby step. the 360 is fixing problems where the ps3 is actually improving itself with usable features. PS3-1, 360-0

    • That’s because the xbox 360 already made a extremely incredible experience online, along time ago, PS3 hasn’t even found their niche. That’s why they’re flooding the market with new (useless) features all the time. Trust me, I’m not a fanboy, I own and use both systems regularly.

What the PS3 should be working on is making a completely different experience. It’s obvious the one they have now is not working out. PS on line is terrible, slow, and lacking some obviously needed features.

I couldn’t see my self paying for Sony online, but I could see my self paying quite a bit for Xbox live.

      • Thats because your stupid and obviously have money to burn. PS3 – 2 360 – 0

        • Umm… no xbox live isn’t burning money… it’s not even that expensive and I agree with him I would not pay for Sony online. If you want to talk about people burning money go bug the WoW players… Now quit being a retarded fan boy and calling people stupid just because you like one system better than the other. Truthfully I believe the PS3 has way more potential than the 360 and also that they have yet to tap into that, so until then I’ll stick to my Xbox.

  • the 360 is improving its functionality, and PS3 is just trying to catch up by adding things that the 360 already has.

I would have to disagree with you, don smith, based on the above points.

  • I wonder if the update for the 360 ended up fixing the issue with people randomly getting kicked from parties. That was really annoying. I did see a difference today, no one really got kicked when I was playing GoW2
