CrunchGear PSA: Don’t buy Smartparts products

I’ve recently discovered that Smartparts, makers of Wi-Fi enabled picture frames, is going out of business and will no longer be supporting their products. Your best bet is to wait until their junk is on clearance and then pick it up cheaply. Otherwise, steer clear. A word from the company after the jump.

Smartparts is in the process of winding its business down. Unfortunately, they were a victim of the economic downturn and are no longer in the DPF business. We apologize for any unfulfilled requests for product and / or information but the situation is beyond our control.

  • This is true – I wish I had known before I bought one of their products. I purchased two of their frames and within an hour of use, the screen on one of them had gone bad. Smart Parts’ website (still) indicates it has a 90 day warranty on its products. I emailed them several times at the email address listed on their website and received no response. I then called and was told the product would be replaced. I was emailed a UPS label to return the frame, and I sent it back to Smart Parts. I never heard anything back from them, despite my phone calls (it seems that now their phone number is no longer manned), emails, and, most recently, a better business bureau complaint. Smart Parts never responded and never sent me a new frame, even though the UPS tracking number shows that they received the frame that I returned to them. I had chosen the SmartParts frame because it was a better value than the other frames – now I’m out the money I paid for it and don’t even have the frame!
