The bottom casing cracking issue that some folks have been experiencing in their 13-inch white MacBooks is real and Apple is willing to replace your MacBook if it happens to you, so sayeth the latest Apple service bulletin.

This is similar to the iPhone cracking syndrome that was eventually accepted as truth but don’t try to take your MacBook back if you dropped it out the window.

Apple added, however, that other portions of the case could be affected by the cracking issue. For all instances, providers were reportedly asked to inspect the MacBook carefully to determine whether the cracks could be the result of the notebook haven been dropped or other accidental damage caused by the owner.

In the event that providers are unable to identify signs that the user is at fault for the cracks, they’re advise to escalate the notebook for coverage by Apple, regardless of whether its 1-year limited warranty has expired.

  • So they’re willing to replace the whole thing? That’s interesting. I may just have to do that with my MacBook since I’ve had cracks on the bottom by the hinge for a while now.

  • It’s funny that they’re finally willing to publicly admit this problem.

After going through three cases on a Macbook in 07, it took an email to Steve Jobs to get mine replaced. I assumed that mine was a classic first generation Mac problem. I guess not.

  • Do I speak to support about it as I noticed cracks on the hinge section of the macbook about 13 months after I bought its now almost 2 years old maybe

  • My Macbook is going on 2 or 3 years now, and I’ve got cracks, so will they still replace it if its out of warranty or old?

  • I had to contact Apple Support twice today about this. The first Apple Rep told me that the program was discontinued and that there was nothing he could do. So i hung up and waited for about 3-5 minutes and called again and got a different Rep. This Rep seemed more helpful then the first one. Nevertheless, I explained the hairline crack and its location to the Rep and he scheduled me an appointment at the Apple Store. He told me that they will look at it and fix it free of charge if its under the guideline for the program. My appoint is Saturday at 9am. I will post back after I go.

  • Thanks a bunch plmiller, I can’t wait to see what the deal is. btw, is your Macbook still under warranty?

    • No it’s not under warranty. I just rescheduled my appoint for tomorrow morning. So hopefully, I’ll get it repaired.

      • Well I went to the Apple Store to have my macbook case checked out since it had gotten those hairline cracks. But I was told that I have to pay to have it repaired. The reason being is because my cracks are on the back of the display panel, between both speakers and near the vent area. The Apple guy told me that was only covered is the cracks on the palm rest area and near the front of the computer. He told me that the part would is $30 and the labor is $80 to have it repaired. I told him that I just drove 30+ miles to come and get this repaired and that I contacted Apple last night and they provided me a case number and told me that it would be covered. the Apple guy was like well let me see what I can do. He took my macbook into the back then came out and told me that he can waive the $80 labor fee and all I would have to pay is the $30 for the part. So I agreed. He said that it’ll be in within 2-3 days and it would get repaired there.

  • I just want to say thanks to this site. I purchased my macbook just a few weeks ago online on ebay. When I got it, I soon discovered that there were hairline cracks going along the front underneath the left side palm rest. I discovered another crack on the bottom near the air vent. This computer was originally purchase in 10/2007 therefore, it is out of warranty. I seen this site so I called the 1800myapple and the tech said that I am out of warranty and I would have to pay for the repair. I took the laptop down to my local apple store and they basically said the same thing at first, but then they looked at the laptop ,seen that it was well tooken care of and they waived the fees for the repair. Go apple!!! They have excellent customer service and that is why I like their products.

    • Yeah, I got mine repaired also for $0. At first when I took it to Apple they told me it was going to be $30. But once the parts came in and I took my Macbook there to get repaired the Apple Genius told me that it would be free. I had hairline cracks near the vent areas. But they replaced the keyboard and some more items. I’m glad it was free because the repairs totaled over $340 and mine is out of warranty also.
Apple is good that that’s why I made the switch :-)

  • I have an old macbook from 2006 that I just got. Hairline cracks…hahah didn’t even look for those. This thing’s got cracks all over! Especially the palmrest area by the edges. Also a big chunk missing in the corner of the screen bezel. I’m treating it like an eggshell, taking it along in sleeve in which I put a folded strip of industrial size bubblewrap. So hopefully it will work for a while! Was a cheapie though.
