I dropped by the NY Auto Show yesterday and checked out this active park assist thing from Ford. I was a little skeptical about a self-parallel parking car, but it is 2009 and I’m pretty sure we were supposed to have flying cars by now. Check out the demo I got in the Lincoln MKS.

I’d like to welcome Ford to 2006..

Hey Al, in order to be effective when trying to be funny or sarcastic, one must also know what they’re talking about. The system introduced by Toyota in 2006 was primitive and flawed. It didn’t work on inclines, it took forever, and it often resulted in dings and dents galore. It relied on cameras instead of the sensors that Ford uses. The Lexus system therefore became a laughing stock of the industry. If you’re gonna do something, might as well do it right. Ford has done just that by perfecting this feature.
Are you kidding Paul!! Lexus LS got this amazing feature over 2 years ago, and it just works great. The Lexus system relies on sensors just like the one on this Ford. However, such systems are not 100% accurate regardless of what company they made it (Lexus or Ford), so you can never depends on it 100% blindley.
No I’m not kidding, Yasser. The Lexus system doesn’t work downhill, it doesn’t work uphill and there have been many reports of people holding up traffic for up to 15 minutes trying to get into a spot. Plus numerous hitting of curbs, and dings into either the car in front or the one in back. That’s why you don’t hear Toyota publisizing it too much like they did when it was new. They know it’s far from perfect. And it really has become somewhat of a laughing stock. I’ll take the Ford system anyday, and I guaranntee if you personally compared the two side by side, so would you.
