I’m starting to suspect that the doofus-filled commercials are designed to confuse and confound Macintards into frothing wildly like Neil Cavuto on Fox News.

A fake tax return, posted on the Windows Team Blog describes the total cost of ownership, after purchasing arbitrary upgrades willy-nilly and assuming you own two Microsoft Office licenses for PC anyway, is $3,367 over the price of a Mac. Fine. We get it. Macs are as expensive as human growth hormone. But what is this document really showing?

Nothing. Assuming you have a few weeks of PC downtime in there, a few conficker infections, and an issue with Excel that completely blows out your hard drive, most PC users are looking at considerably more time lost in PC use as compared to Mac use. PCs are cheap because everyone wants to buy them and there’s no money in them anymore. It’s like saying matches are better than a lighter because they’re cheap and don’t require refills. This is absolutely true, but when you run out of matches, the opportunity cost of schlepping to the bodega to get a new pack far outweighs the firebringing power of a Zippo.

Somewhere inside Redmond a marketing team is chuckling to themselves. Why? Because they changed the script. They’re talking about money and when it comes to Macs, you can’t play there yet. Wait a few months for a $999 MacBook, however, and the game will really be afoot.

  • Whats all this mobile me, office, quicken and such? My dell didnt come with any of that. Nor did it come with ilife ‘09, but my macbook did. Why the hell would i want a $300 brown-ray player? This is retarded.

  • This is quite funny, when Apple was bashing windows it was all good, but now that M$ is bashing Apple it is wrong? Now common those ads are brilliant, and they work.

Oh and I am a Mac.

    • Hahah this author is retarded. He must have PC penis envy.

Looks like the ads are working! Apple fanboys like him are foaming at the mouth now that their weakness is being exposed.

      • Didn’t you know that Biggs always have PC Penis envy. Every article he writes is negative towards any competing product on the market(mainly MS)… He and the other douch are the worse of the crunch writers.

    • Hahaha yeah this is hilarious. This author is such a mactard.

Looks like the ads are working as intended!

    • The difference is the mac vs opc ads were funny and mostly, but not all true. The microsoft ads are deliberately misleading by having actors instead of real people. Nobody believes that John Hodgeman Is a literal computer. Secondly, the commercials are not even entertaining. Nothing is intentionally funny or amusing.

Nothing that microsoft has said In these ads hasn’t already been said by ballmer.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say It again. The world is a would be a better place without windows. Linux should have the 90% marketshare. And I’m a Mac.

      • I find it hilarious that people are still fighting the “but they hired actors!” angle.

Its a COMMERCIAL, what do you expect?

Second, they are not trying to entertain you, MS is more professional than that, they are trying to make a point, and by how much Apple fanboys seem to hate these commercials, they are clearly winning in that regard.

  • Just so you know, Zippo lighters don’t last forever either (lighter fluid).

One other thing, the way you wrote the article makes it sound like the PC costs $3367 more than the Mac.

  • Why does anyone care? Macs will never be able to, or have to, compete with PCs when it comes to price by why would a Mac person care? I’m pc all the way but I don’t get the fuss. Buy what you like, enjoy it, repeat as necessary. All I am saying, is give peace a chance.

  • Whoops! On the PC service and support cost, they forgot a $299 Geek Squad home repair visit every 3 months for virus/trojan/wallet cleaning:
    $299 x 12 = there goes your savings.

  • I’m a PC, and I run Linux.

Mac v. MS, it’s like asking which cell-mate you prefer. I’d prefer not to be in prison at all.

    • True.

Mac vs PC is like Gun vs Sword. And in Linux I have to craft my own wooden dagger.

      • More like with Mac you are given a Sniper

With Windows you are given an Automatic Rifle

With Linux you are given the INSTRUCTIONS and PARTS for an orbital satellite laser array, have fun getting it working.

  • You know D4, I can love my Mac and still appreciate those M$ ads. And you are quite wrong calling me a Mac Fanboy as I have 5 PCs and only one Mac, doesn’t mean I don’t like all of them, hell I even like Linux sometimes.

  • Wait until Mommy and Daddy’s son downloads some porn and a bum .exe file drops in there messing up the whole system, hilarious.

    • Wait until he thinks he in invonurable on a mac and gives out Mommy and Daddy’s personal info to s phishing site.

Stupidity hurts regardless of what platform you are on.

  • Ok, seriously, is it your job to defend Apple from these ads? I mean, I thought you worked for a tech site, doing tech news, but it would really appear your career is now to comment on what a crime against humanity you think this particular ad campaign represents.

  • I’ll tell you who really foams at the mouths. The Apple haters who get all worked up with Mac fanboys point out the illogic of Microsoft’s whole campaign.

Yes, PCs are cheaper than Macs when you don’t use the same quality parts and include equivalent software. No big whoop. There are $2,000 and $3,000 PC laptops too. But Apple owns 60 percent of that market. (Or is it more now?) Big surprise. PC users aren’t forced to pay that much to own a PC. There are cheaper alternatives. There aren’t that many alternatives for Mac users.

It’s kind of stating the obvious. Yep, PCs are cheaper. And yes, some cars don’t survive crashes as well, they’re cheaper! And yes, there are bargains in the music world. William Hung will cost you all lot less for your kid’s Bar Mitzvah than the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

    • Guess what, PCs are cheaper than Macs even when you DO use the same quality parts, and include equivalent software.

All us “Apple haters,” which is to say the 97% of the world population who choose any one of 1,000 other companies as our computer hardware vendor of choice, get worked up because of posts like this, which claim to point out “illogic” but then end up just parroting the same old “it must be better, because it costs more” unreason that is the hallmark of you Macheads.

It is the same lack of reasoning that gave rise to the Bernie Madoffs of the world. It can’t be a scam, because he won’t even talk to you unless you are worth millions, and look how prestigious his client list is. There’s no way that many people with that much money could ever be fooled by the oldest scam in the books!

    • “Yes, PCs are cheaper than Macs when you don’t use the same quality parts and include equivalent software.”

      WRONG

MACs are pretty much entirely PC parts now, the ONLY difference is the motherboard, everyting, even the CPU, is the same off-the-shelf part you would find in a Dell.

The Toshiba Qosmio series are some of the most powerful and high-end gamign laptops you will find today. Even th starter model at $1500 BLOWS THE PANTS off of practically any Mac laptop, and even most desktops. Far higher quality parts (especially the speakers) at a fraction of the price.

“But Apple owns 60 percent of that market.”

Ummm, what? Last I checked Apple has less than 10% of market share over PCs.

“It’s kind of stating the obvious. Yep, PCs are cheaper. And yes, some cars don’t survive crashes as well, they’re cheaper!”

Except that Macs are JUST as likely to crash as a PC. This isn’t 1998 anymore.

      • Cyber Akuma, you have obviously missed the latest Machead argument technique. You slice and dice the numbers until you find one that favors you, like “laptops sold in retail stores for over $2,000″ or “digital media players not counting game systems or phones except the ipod touch or iphone” and then you crow about how Apple DOMINATES that market.

What he says is technically true. Of laptops sold at brick and mortar retail outlets for over $2,000, the majority of that specific small segment of the market are Apple laptops, followed close behind by Sony. The bigger question would be, how important a market segment is that in a world where the biggest growth category is sub-$500 netbooks.

Of course to that you get the typical Machead answer seen in the article “well just wait until Apple does____ at some unspecified point in the future. Then you will really be eating crow!”

  • The main thing is Windows, Linux, and Mac os X are for different people.
    Linux:
tech savy people who want to have full customization, a free os that can run on a cheap machine, or people who just want a cheap computer to surf the web, chat, and do some word processing (ubuntu).

    Mac OS X:
Musiciens / artists, people who don’t really know much about computers and who want to download lots of porn.

Windows: Games, cheaper for more powerful hardware. Coders (for some languages)

  • Oh my God, this is HILARIOUS!

The fact that a Crunchgear poster woudl go to SUCH lengths and detail to try to discredit the commercial is proof that the campaign is effective and hitting the mac fanboys where it hurts.

I mean, look at Apple’s Mac vs PC ads, anybody with a functioning brain can see what is wrong with them, but apparnetly these are perfectly fine, how DARE MS fight back to years and years of insults and mudslinding from Apple with actual FACTS instead of baseless insults?

    • You are a fool to believe that ANY commercial could be effective when aimed at a Mac Fanboy (whatever that is?).

Here’s the thing about that tax return: It doesn’t show the income statement! People making real money are often willing to pay for better quality tools, a nicer working environment, and fewer hassles. The results show up in the bottom line.

      • Nobody in their right minds would think these commercials are aimed at the fanboys.

My point was that these commercials are clearly being effective if they are making the fanboys cry so much.

“People making real money are often willing to pay for better quality tools, a nicer working environment, and fewer hassles.”

Which people on crunchgear have proven time and time again Windows and MacOS are the same in that regard.

  • How do you compare that stupid HP D5100T to a Mac Pro.. Mobileme is $100 a year times 5 = $500 + $70 when u purchase with a mac. Now Let’s Talk Anti-Virus and Spyware for OVER 5 YEARS. ummm 89.99 time 6 OVER 5 YEARS is 538.95 + the repairs for your machine for those times that the anti-Virus doesnt help. Don’t tell me you can do it yourself because according to the dumbass who posted this, He purchased One-One which mean your a dumbass who can’t operate a computer. Don’t say “Oo it’s a Mac, i dont know how to use them… then your dumbass shouldn’t be buyign 2 of them at once… Dell 3 year protection.. I dont feel like talkin to India, thank you..

  • Funny like when windowswhores talk about Mac, they alway cite wrong numbers for maket shares. Hmm. Yep. They gonna beleive anything.

  • I would pay twice the $3400 to never have to touch a PC ever again.

  • macs are a joke, have a good laugh reading the apple forum with their bad experiences with their expensive junks made in china
