Lending credence to the rumor that Sony is doing away with the UMD drive on the next PSP comes word, beit rumor, from Ars that Patapon 2 will only be released digitally next month. You can, however, pick up physical product at your local game shop, though. Or so says Ars’s mole. In total, there are three ways of getting Patapon 2 for your PSP.

So the deal is that P2 will be released on PSN for $15, but you can go into your local GameStop, Best Buy or whoever and pick up a Patapon 2 PSP case that has a download voucher and nothing else. If you choose to go down that route then you’ll have to fork over an extra $5, which we assume goes towards the cost of manufacturing and shipping empty cases. The third alternative according to the Ars mole says that certain retailers’ websites will sell just the download codes as well.

  • What a stupid way for Sony to try to fight piracy, by just removing the ability for gamers to buy the game on disk.

And don’t give me that “dd is the future” crap, you KNOW this move was because of piracy, not for the sake of DD.

I normally am NOT one to advocate piracy, but I hope this gets cracked within a heartbeat so Sony stops screwing the consumer, other regions got this game on UMD.

    • If it were purely to fight piracy, why don’t we hear the same rumor (games to be released only as digital downloads) for the DS? It’s not like it’s so much harder to pirate a DS game than it is to pirate a PSP game.

Let’s let Sony do whatever it is it’s going to do before we yell at it.

      • It IS harder to pirate a DS game, because unlike the PSP you need special hardware and its a far bigger hassle to dump a DS cartridge into a rom format than a PSP UMD into ISO format.

  • That looks like a fun game. Like World of Goo without trusses, but with spears.
