EVERYBODY, even my Mom who has never played a mario game, knows that goombas would be the pawns (they look and move like pawns!) Then mirror them with mushrooms or the toadstool people (Coins? YUCK!) Then there are other choices; like twomps, look and move like rooks; winged koopas, look and move like knights and better reflect yoshi as knight and carries a more unified comprehensive theme.
