Cheap Zalman surround-sound headset looks like it would make you top-heavy

Not all of us have room for surround sound setups in our tiny studio apartments, which we’re thinking about moving out of because they’re going to raise the rent again. And some of us just don’t want the tangle of wires to deal with. Enter the growing market of surround-sound headsets, of which it appears the first bargain bin sets are hitting the streets. Zalman is a well-known brand, but I question the wisdom of buying a $60 headset promising six-channel analog but not mentioning any qualifications from Dolby, THX, or what have you.

I also question the long term cost of the ZM-RS6F+M, since it looks like it weighs as much as three normal headsets. I’m talking about medical bills to fix your neck. At least it folds up while you wait in the chiropractor’s office.

But I guess if you’re short on scratch and have a strong neck, this might be a good idea until the more premium ones come down in price. The AX Pro is only $160, though, you might want to give it a shot.

  • Just a note, there are two cheaper versions of the Ax Pro that don’t have the digital input/output box, meant for the PC only. One has analog plugs for a soundcard, the other only a usb interface. Both going for $89.99 on Newegg right now.

  • these headphones (or an older model) have been out for several years. Newegg’s been sellin em for quite a while.

  • They’re not as heavy as you might think. I’ve had a set of the older model for years and they’re pretty comfortable.

  • I have this headphones, they are really light even though they have 6 speakers in total, and they have good grip so you don’t feel them at all. I’ve had them for about 2 years, so they’ve been around a while. You could have checked them before writing. Incredibly good sound isolation, no noise when sound is not playing, expected from Zalman. Great for music, for gaming and movies not the same feeling as 5.1 surround speaker systems, but still interesting experience.
For me the downside is that I cant use them with my laptop since they need 5.1 channel output.
