Ah OQO. You basically made us all want you. You teased, you upgraded, and now, in the middle of this downturn and, in the face of massive competition by far inferior netbooks, you might be dying.

JKOntheRun is reporting that the OQO Model 02+ won’t be sold, the company is in grave financial trouble, and eXpansys, an OQO reseller, has pulled the new product off the shelves.

Dear Customer,

Unfortunately eXpansys has taken the decision, due to uncertainties
to stock availability of the OQO Model 2+, to remove the OQO model
from our web site.

While we try to keep the information on our web site fully up to date
with the status of each product, inevitably in some cases we are not
informed that a particular item is no longer available until after we
have orders for it.

We apologise for any inconvenience.
Regards

Goodbye, my darling little palmtop. Goodbye.

  • They should have used a clamshell design as I tried to use one and the keyboard was just terrible! It is no wonder they are likely to go out of business. You would think that after so long using a hunt and peck keyboard that they would be smart enough to realize everyone using Vista uses a touch type keyboard not their thumbs?

  • The basic flaw is to believe that people would want to do the kinds of work they do with a full laptop using your thumbs? That basic assumption is what has doomed OOQ since they started years ago. Updating anything in the computer without addressing that basic key assumption which is wrong will never create any demand.

People would be willing to sacrafice and use a smaller screen, not have all of the frills of large laptop, but even anticipating a tighter position with your two hands to type, people would never want to use a two fingered approach to performing PC work. They should have used a traditional handhelds clamshell design.

Those handhelds back in the 1990’s were the perfect size to carry and use. Their only flaw was nobody at that time could fit a full PC into that small cavity. Now technology can enable that but so far all of the computer companies have forgotton about the basic way we want to use a computer.

  • I feel the OQO was just a tease but could not deliver the goods. Yes I am willing to sacrafice with a small screen and keyboard if I could have a full Windows PC. I am NOT willing to try to attempt to do my windows programs with my thumbs.
