As far as picture quality in home cinema goes, nothing can beat laser projectors, which use lasers as light source. And today, Sanyo in Japan made another leap forward by unveiling a new model that boasts 7,000 lumens [JP], which is the world’s highest brightness level.

The yet to be named super-short focus RGB laser projector produces full HD images as large as 150 inches when you place it 94 cm away from the screen (100 inches if the screen is 63cm away). The throw ratio stands at 0.28.

Sanyo hasn’t revealed yet when they plan to bring the projector to market and how much to charge for it. At least we know it’s sized at 2370×510×630mm and that it promises to be awesome.

  • DO WANT!

I can’t wait to see the price on this behemoth, and I’ll gladly take out a second mortgage on my house to get it!

One question though: If it’s a _laser_ projector, why does it have…lenses? Hmmm…

    • I think the lense is used to spread the image to get the throw (100 inches if the screen is 63cm away) otherwise you would have to be much further away to get that size.

      • Actually, now that I’ve read the description page on Sanyo’s website, I understand the tech they’re using.

It’s not a laser-projector (like I had initially thought). It’s a 3-DLP system that uses 3 lasers as the light sources. (Imagine replacing the light bulb in a DLP projector with a laser, only 3 of them: R, G, B) So this is really just a very big DLP projector with ultra-clean and bright light sources.

It’s still pretty neat, but I’m holding out for a pure, true short-throw laser projector.

BTW: The little bumps on the top left/right are cameras that detect when someone’s getting too close to the lens. It will turn off the lasers as a safety precaution.
