If you can’t read your Kindle 2 because it’s too light, fear not. This thread shows you how to add darker, non-aliased fonts to your 16-shades-of-gray beauty.
All the hack does is replace the standard fonts with new, darker fonts but many are complaining so this might be just the thing for a lazy Sunday afternoon.
Generally, the issue has to do with font smoothing. While on-screen fonts against a contrasting background look great with with font smoothing but on what is essentially a gray background, the fonts look gray. And, most importantly, the blacks are washed out as well, resulting in light text.

I’ve been reluctant to try these hacks because I just didn’t know how complicated it might be, or how much danger it might present. For some reason this post inspired me to do the hack this morning and now I couldn’t be happier. It’s simple, fast, safe and effective.
First, go here: https://sites.google.com/a/etccreations.com/kdesignworks/Home/font-install-files
Download one of the font files there, drag it to the root directory of your Kindle 2, and then “update” the Kindle 2. It’s that simple. If you don’t like the font, pick another and try again, or go back to the original. It takes about 2 minutes total to swap it out, and it makes a big difference in readability.
I also was cautious about making any “unofficial” Kindle 2 updates, but based on weatherman’s post, decided to try it.
Five minutes later I have the Bold Narrow Native font working perfectly. It is MUCH darker and easier to read.
If I added a font wouldn’t that void my warranty? I love my K2 but am disappointed in the contrast but am a non-techie and very hesitant to mess with it.
I broke the screen to my k2 when I dropped it. I either want to replace it (where can I get another screen) or how can I reverse the text (white on black)? Who can help?
My kindle will not show anything but the battery icon in the display. After i created a folder and sub folder for pictures. How can i fix it.
