Only a few devices really redefined my life: that stent, a fire truck, the Ford Fairmont, and the PlayStation are a few that come to mind right now. Edge Magazine has a great look at the history of the PlayStation, from its humble beginnings as a SNES with a CD drive to the device that changed the gaming market forever.

And it’s a vision that rose out from the rubble of a very public disaster. At the Consumer Electronics Show in June 1991, Sony revealed to the world a videogame console on which it had jointly worked with Nintendo. This SNES with a built-in CD-ROM drive was a project driven by Ken Kutaragi, a Sony executive who had come out of its hardware engineering division. It was to be Nintendo’s route into a brave new world of multimedia, and a way for Kutaragi to show his company how important the videogame industry could be. But the very day after Sony’s announcement, Nintendo declared that it would be breaking its deal with Sony by partnering with Philips instead.

From the ashes of that partnership came Sony’s effort to rule the gaming world for all time, a noble and, some would say, lofty goal. The result? Sony opened the game platform wars to another player and the world is better for it.

  • Hey JayBee am I supposed to fel choked up right now? cuz I am. I remember the nights I stayed up playing Resident Evil and how I was amazed at the graphics and gameplay. I remember the first time a hunter came in to the mansion that intro of being able to see through its eyes as it approached the mansion terrified me. All I remember is thinking WTF and then a loud shriek all of a sudden Chris’s head got chopped off. Those were the glory days, I mean come on none of us had experienced anything like that and it was GREAT! Sure alone in the dark was somewhat similar, NOT! Over all PS was the great, Can you remember playing Tekken 2 on that thing or even Marvel Vs. Capcom. I mean OMG I still play PS1 games on my PS3 and I still find myself enjoying them. I just recently beat God of War 1 and 2 on God Mode WTF ish is insane I wanted to throw the controller at the screen many times but that is the magic and beauty of a well crafted system with an excellent library of games to keep you coming back for more. It also helped that my PS3 had the I/O port in the back and I was playing DBZ games long before they got re-released for the US market. Simply put an amazing system and will hold a place in my heart for years to come. For the record I still have my OG PS, PS2, and my PS3. LOVE THEM!

  • Good God, man! I lost my virginity in a Ford Fairmont! That was my first car, and it remains immortalized in my soul. I’m glad to hear that I’m not the only one who remembers it fondly…
