OK. This is an official GE video so once you get past the first 50 seconds of fluff, it explains how microholographic discs work in everyday speak. Seriously, it’s 1:52 out of your life and you’ll probably learn something about next-gen optical media. Click through to watch the video.

  • 500 Gigabytes! GREAT SCOTT!!!!

But, really, still comparing it to CD storage? Haven’t we moved up to comparing to DVD storage? Admittedly, it isn’t as impressive, since it’d only be, what, 100 DVDs?

That is a pretty cool idea, and the capacity is great but I think it will be quite some time until we see read, and more importantly write, speeds that make this useful. I do see something like this pairing great with SSD in a sort of front end back end model.

  • And OMG its 5 Blu-Ray 100GB discs!!!

  • But seriously, I have been following holographic storage for years, ever since Popular Science published it back in the late 90s or early two thousandsies! I cant wait for this technology to come out, its so exciting, a 1080p HS movie that fits on one disc!
