palmpreAt least one so-called expert is predicting the Palm Pre will be a dud and no one will buy it. But what do you think? Hell, if you have been following the Pre ever since we announced it here on CrunchGear, you know as much about the phone as anyone else including this expert. Feel free to sound off in the comments too.

  • Obviously, the “analyst” predicting this is an utter moron. Yes, it’s doubtful the Pre will have an explosive “flying-out-of-the-door-on-day-one” parade like the iPhone and yes, I’m sure some people will camp out to be the first. However, I think the Pre will be solid seller on it’s own merits. No, it’s not an iPhone killer and no, first gen iPhone owners aren’t going to jump ship en masse to Sprint on day 1 of their contract expiration with AT&T.
Bottom line, despite some bugs as any first gen product has, it will have solid enough sales to help keep Palm and Sprint alive.

  • i agree to all the above but if they dont get it out to the masses pronto people that have no patience (like me) will jump ship and just go with some other phone or carrier!! ok not the carrier i love my sprint never had an issue like i did with AT&T.

    • @diamongurl- Believe it or not, I have had Treo 600, have a Treo 700p right now and have had Sprint for well over 10 years. Despite that, I will be switching to AT&T when the new (yes I’m convinced it will) iPhone comes out later this year.
I haven’t had much to complain about with Sprint, but the iPhone is just too compelling for myself and my wife (she hasn’t had a “smartphone” yet.)
I do think there are enough Palm-devotees and enough people that hate the other carriers that the Pre will be more than a moderate success.

      • Just take a 30-day test drive before you port and cancel. The network $uck for me – more dropped calls in a week than I had in 3-4 years with Sprint. Would love an iPhone myself, but I actually need to make quality phone calls.

  • I think it will definitely be a good device, it just has a lot to be compared against, specifically, the iPhone. It isn’t going to win by having a huge list of features either, it has to be fundamentally nicer/easier to use/whatever than the iPhone. This might come from better battery life, nicer user interface, etc.

I hope the phone is good and creates some strong demand, it would be nice to see strong competition between the cell phone companies, data plans might come down in price with that… either that, or we see companies like AT&T at some point offering you to extend your data plan to your laptop as more laptops have a connection built in.

  • My comment should be taken with a grain of salt given I’m a certifiable palm-girl, evidenced by the fact that i upgraded to the completely hopeless lifedrive and defended it to the death.

But if the pre is in execution what it is in hype then it will do well. It has features that people want and appears intuitive and easy to use.

My palm-hating husband (he shelled out for the lifedrive for me) even wants one.

  • They keep trying… but it’s still nowhere near as cool as the iphone… i’ll stick to whoever has the iphone and i’ll be buying the new version when it comes out.
