Last week I said I had “high hopes” for Acer’s 11.6-inch Aspire One 751 netbook, citing the HD-resolution screen, large keyboard, and pleasing aesthetics. Pocket-lint recently reviewed the computer and, unfortunately, it seems as though my hopes may have been dashed.

Apparently the 751 does indeed have a gorgeous screen and a super portable thin-and-light frame, but the underpowered 1.33GHz Atom Z520 CPU makes watching anything other than standard definition video content a no-go, the keyboard “is like typing on the back of a sponge,” and the 8mm-thick screen is easily distorted by bending the plastic lid around. Oh, and the “multi-gesture” trackpad seems to be more trouble than it’s worth.

The whole setup looks nice, though, at about an inch thin at the thickest point. Battery life with the standard three-cell battery topped just over three hours with Wi-Fi turned off, so we’re probably looking at about 2.5 hours of real-world usage.

I could live without the HD video stuff but if the keyboard isn’t all it’s cracked up to be, that’d certainly be a deal-breaker. In the end, Pocket-lint says, “We want to love it: it looks great out and about, but has so many issues, it is a nightmare to live with.”
