We should celebrate, not hate, the viewing party feature of the Watchmen Blu-ray release

One of Peter Ha’s favorite movies of the past few months, Watchmen, comes out on Blu-ray and DVD in late July. Maybe the 21st, maybe the 28th; who knows. What we do know is that the Blu-ray version of the movie will have some sort of viewing party mode that one dude already called “stupid,” an opinion I disagree with.

When watching the movie, the disc will go out onto the Internet and call up your Facebook friends. “Hey, guys, Peter Ha is watching Watchmen right now, do you want to watch the movie with him?” Then the disc syncs you all up and y’all can chat and so forth while watching the movie. Sounds harmless to me. I picture most Watchmen fans as huge nerds and tech geeks, tech geeks who probably own like 18 Blu-ray players, just because. Why wouldn’t they want to chat and whatnot while watching the film? Or, if they don’t want to, then don’t; it’s really not a big deal at all.

I think people are too quick to pull the “this is stupid, DO NOT WANT” trigger these days.

  • Yeah, not my cup ‘o tea, but I’m sure it appeals to some folks. How about a/v chat on a secondary display while we watch the feature. Oh, right! We’re still in 2009. bummer…..

  • I actually think this is a great idea. I saw Watchmen with the same group of people twice and while the first time was done in complete silence, the second time was full of (polite!) whispers about things we were seeing we didn’t see the first time. That’s one of the reasons I’m excited about the DVD. My friends and I will be able to get together and analyze it. We can pause, rewind, fast forward, anything we want. The ability to do this not only with local friends, but friends over the internet can’t be anything but a bonus.

If you don’t like the feature, don’t use it. It’s not like the neckbeards of the internet will randomly bust into your viewing with comments about how Zach Snyder left out (random arbitrary object here) and Watchmen is the worst movie ever just because the feature exists.

  • I hated the movie.

    • I personally thought it was a great movie and as close of a proper Watchmen translation as we’re ever gonna get. Not that one was necessary, but if you’re gonna do it, at least do it right.

What can I say except for “lol opinions”?

  • Seems perfect for all the haters of any movie; they could do MST3K-style bashing without having to get together in meatspace.
